Owing to their low prevalence, patients with rare diseases face numerous hurdles when they seek help in the medical system. The recipient of Sir Edward Youde Memorial Scholarship for Undergraduate Students in 1997\/98, Clinical Associate Professor from the Department of Paediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine, the University of Hong Kong, Dr. Brian Chung, saw the needs of these patients and devoted into the research of clinical genetics and genomics.<\/p>\n<p>Even though rare diseases are individually scarce, they are collectively common, constituting about 1.5% of the Hong Kong population, thus bringing notable burden to the healthcare system. Their conditions are often more complex than most other cases, requiring doctors to allot a significant amount of time to keep up with various journal articles in order to treat them. Despite the challenges, when Dr. Chung is finally able to uncover the aetiology of the disease and the pathogenic genetic mutation, he was rewarded with great intellectual satisfaction, but more importantly an answer for his patients.<\/p>\n<p>Seeing the mature development of genetics and genomics in Canada, Dr. Chung furthered his specialty training in The Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto during 2007 to 2010. He became a specialist in Clinical Genetics and acquired many experiences in both clinical service and research. Returning to Hong Kong with valuable insights, Dr. Chung, in collaboration with other doctors, established the sub-specialty of Genetics and Genomics (Paediatrics) under the Hong Kong College of Paediatricians, proving to be the first step in training local doctors in the field. He subsequently contributed to the establishment of the Genetics &amp; Genomics Clinic in the HKU Health System; and also made the discoveries of new genetic syndromes.<\/p>\n<p>His achievements were recognised by various awards, notably the Outstanding Teaching Award, Teaching Excellence Awards, HKU (2019) and Sir Patrick Manson Gold Medal (2018). Yet, when he was prompted to recall his proudest moment as a doctor, what came to his mind was not the prize-giving ceremonies; rather the memories of taking care of his patients. Providing the most accurate and appropriate information and consultation to the patient and his\/her family, and assisting them into making decisions amidst their perplexity of the disease, were truly his most precious experiences practising medicine.<\/p>\n<p>His journey in medicine is both physically and mentally demanding. As a houseman, he spent many nights in the hospital on call and was often physically exhausted. After entering the training in paediatrics, he faced many heart-aching life and death situations. Even if Dr. Chung and his colleagues have seen the passing away of paediatric patients many times before, as they witness another young life being taken away, they could not refrain from tearing. This is also the reason why he is strict with his students, hoping to set up a good example and prepare them for their future journey.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Chung served relentlessly in clinical service, teaching and academic research to facilitate the development of genetics and genomics in Hong Kong, and also acted as a bridge among various parties in policymaking. He will shortly engage in the Hong Kong Genome Project and lead a large-scale genome sequencing project, in order to lay the foundation of genomic medicine locally. It will also benefit the training of local expertise and facilitate genomic research of Asian population.<\/p>\n<p>The attentiveness and similarity in the background of Sir Edward Youde Scholarship interviewers had encouraged the budding medical student 20 years ago to speak of his passion for medicine with easiness and confidence. Today, Dr. Chung still spoke with the same passion of his practice in medicine and memories with patients; and with it a steadfast dedication to his clinical service, academic research and nurturing of future generations of doctors in Hong Kong.<\/p>\n<p>\u6839\u64da\u4e16\u754c\u885b\u751f\u7d44\u7e54\u7684\u7d71\u8a08\uff0c\u5168\u7403\u5df2\u77e5\u6709\u4e94\u5343\u81f3\u516b\u5343\u7a2e\u7f55\u898b\u75be\u75c5\uff0c\u5927\u90e8\u4efd\u8207\u57fa\u56e0\u907a\u50b3\u6709\u95dc\u3002\u5b83\u5011\u75c5\u767c\u7387\u4e4b\u4f4e\uff0c\u4ee5\u81f3\u60a3\u8005\u5f80\u5f80\u5728\u6c42\u8a3a\u8def\u4e0a\u8655\u8655\u78b0\u58c1\u3002\u5c24\u5fb7\u7235\u58eb\u7d00\u5ff5\u57fa\u91d1\u672c\u79d1\u751f\u734e\u5b78\u91d197\/98\u5e74\u5f97\u734e\u8005\uff0c\u9999\u6e2f\u5927\u5b78\u91ab\u5b78\u9662\u5152\u7ae5\u53ca\u9752\u5c11\u5e74\u79d1\u5b78\u7cfb\u81e8\u5e8a\u526f\u6559\u6388\u937e\u4f83\u8a00\u91ab\u751f\u5728\u884c\u91ab\u7684\u8def\u4e0a\uff0c\u770b\u5230\u9019\u7fa4\u7f55\u898b\u75c5\u60a3\u8005\u7684\u9700\u8981\uff0c\u7acb\u5fd7\u6295\u8eab\u907a\u50b3\u5b78\u53ca\u57fa\u56e0\u7d44\u5b78\u7814\u7a76\u4e4b\u4e2d\u3002<\/p>\n<p>\u96d6\u7136\u500b\u5225\u7f55\u898b\u75c5\u7684\u60a3\u8005\u4e0d\u591a\uff0c\u4f46\u7d9c\u89c0\u6240\u6709\u7f55\u898b\u75c5\u60a3\u8005\u537b\u662f\u4f54\u4e86\u9999\u6e2f\u4eba\u53e3\u76841.5%\uff0c\u5176\u75c5\u60c5\u4ea6\u5f80\u5f80\u8f03\u8907\u96dc\uff0c\u9700\u904b\u7528\u8a31\u591a\u8cc7\u6e90\u8655\u7406\uff0c\u6240\u4ee5\u662f\u516c\u5171\u91ab\u7642\u7cfb\u7d71\u7576\u4e2d\u4e0d\u5bb9\u5ffd\u8996\u7684\u5b58\u5728\u3002\u4f46\u7576\u937e\u91ab\u751f\u80fd\u5920\u5728\u8907\u96dc\u7684\u75c5\u60c5\u4e2d\u62bd\u7d72\u525d\u7e6d\uff0c\u7814\u7a76\u51fa\u81f4\u75c5\u7684\u57fa\u56e0\uff0c\u4e0d\u50c5\u80fd\u7372\u5f97\u5b78\u8853\u4e0a\u7684\u6eff\u8db3\u611f\uff0c\u66f4\u662f\u80fd\u70ba\u75c5\u4eba\u63d0\u4f9b\u4e00\u500b\u7b54\u6848\u3002<\/p>\n<p>\u6709\u898b\u52a0\u62ff\u5927\u5728\u907a\u50b3\u5b78\u53ca\u57fa\u56e0\u7d44\u5b78\u4e0a\u767c\u5c55\u6210\u719f\uff0c\u937e\u91ab\u751f\u57282007\u81f310\u5e74\u524d\u5f80\u591a\u502b\u591a\u5927\u5b78\u8d6b\u8d6b\u6709\u540d\u7684\u5152\u7ae5\u91ab\u9662The Hospital for Sick Children\u6df1\u9020\u3002\u4ed6\u5728\u7576\u5730\u63a5\u53d7\u4e863\u5e74\u7684\u8a13\u7df4\uff0c\u6210\u70ba\u4e86\u57fa\u56e0\u7d44\u5b78\u7684\u5c08\u79d1\u91ab\u751f\uff0c\u5438\u6536\u4e86\u4e0d\u5c11\u81e8\u5e8a\u53ca\u7814\u7a76\u7684\u7d93\u9a57\u3002\u56de\u5230\u9999\u6e2f\u5f8c\uff0c\u937e\u91ab\u751f\u8207\u5176\u4ed6\u91ab\u751f\u5728\u9999\u6e2f\u91ab\u5b78\u5c08\u79d1\u5b78\u9662\u8f44\u4e0b\u7684\u5152\u79d1\u91ab\u5b78\u9662\u6210\u7acb\u4e86\u7b2c\u4e00\u500b\u907a\u50b3\u5b78\u53ca\u57fa\u56e0\u7d44\u5b78\u7684\u5c08\u79d1\uff0c\u70ba\u57f9\u8a13\u672c\u5730\u7684\u5c08\u79d1\u91ab\u751f\u8e0f\u51fa\u7b2c\u4e00\u6b65\u3002\u4e4b\u5f8c\u5728HKU Health System\u4e0b\u8a2d\u7acb\u4e86\u907a\u50b3\u5b78\u53ca\u57fa\u56e0\u7d44\u5b78\u8a3a\u6240\uff0c\u670d\u52d9\u6709\u95dc\u75c5\u4eba\uff0c\u4e26\u5728\u7814\u7a76\u4e2d\u6210\u529f\u767c\u73fe\u4e86\u65b0\u7684\u7f55\u898b\u75c5\u3002<\/p>\n<p>\u4ed6\u5728\u5b78\u8853\u7814\u7a76\u53ca\u6559\u5b78\u4e0a\u90fd\u6709\u5091\u51fa\u7684\u6210\u5c31\uff0c\u4f8b\u5982\u57282019\u5e74\u7372\u9812\u9999\u6e2f\u5927\u5b78\u5091\u51fa\u6559\u5b78\u734e\uff0c\u53c8\u57282018\u5e74\u7372\u9812Sir Patrick Manson Gold Medal\u4ee5\u8868\u63da\u5176\u91ab\u5b78\u535a\u58eb\u7562\u696d\u8ad6\u6587\u3002\u4f46\u662f\u7576\u4ed6\u56de\u60f3\u8d77\u904e\u53bb\u6700\u4ee4\u4ed6\u611f\u5230\u81ea\u8c6a\u7684\u6642\u523b\uff0c\u5728\u8166\u6d77\u4e2d\u6d6e\u73fe\u7684\u4e26\u4e0d\u662f\u5728\u9812\u734e\u53f0\u4e0a\u7684\u756b\u9762\uff0c\u4e43\u662f\u8207\u75c5\u4eba\u76f8\u8655\u7684\u9ede\u6ef4\u3002\u5728\u907a\u50b3\u75c5\u60a3\u8005\u53ca\u5176\u5bb6\u5c6c\u8ff7\u60d8\u4e4b\u6642\uff0c\u80fd\u5920\u63d0\u4f9b\u6e96\u78ba\u7684\u8cc7\u8a0a\u53ca\u5408\u9069\u7684\u8aee\u8a62\uff0c\u5e6b\u52a9\u4ed6\u5011\u4f5c\u51fa\u8271\u96e3\u7684\u6289\u64c7\uff0c\u5be6\u5728\u662f\u4ed6\u611f\u5230\u6700\u53ef\u8cb4\u7684\u7d93\u6b77\u3002<\/p>\n<p>\u56de\u60f3\u8d77\u884c\u91ab\u7684\u904e\u7a0b\uff0c\u937e\u91ab\u751f\u4ea6\u9ad4\u6703\u5230\u4e0d\u5c11\u8089\u9ad4\u548c\u5fc3\u9748\u4e0a\u7684\u78e8\u7df4\u3002\u7576\u5be6\u7fd2\u91ab\u751f\u6642\uff0c\u4ed6\u5e38\u5e38\u90fd\u8981\u5728\u91ab\u9662\u901a\u5bb5\u7576\u503c\uff0c\u5fd9\u5f97\u7b4b\u75b2\u529b\u7aed\uff1b\u6210\u70ba\u5152\u79d1\u91ab\u751f\u5f8c\uff0c\u66f4\u662f\u6703\u9762\u5c0d\u8a31\u591a\u4ee4\u4eba\u5fc3\u9178\u7684\u751f\u96e2\u6b7b\u5225\u3002\u6bcf\u6bcf\u6709\u5152\u79d1\u75c5\u4eba\u96e2\u4e16\uff0c\u9664\u4e86\u5bb6\u5c6c\u4e4b\u5916\uff0c\u4ea6\u6703\u6253\u64ca\u9577\u671f\u7167\u9867\u4ed6\u7684\u91ab\u8b77\u4eba\u54e1\u3002\u5373\u4f7f\u4ed6\u5011\u9762\u5c0d\u751f\u96e2\u6b7b\u5225\u6bd4\u5e38\u4eba\u591a\uff0c\u4f46\u773c\u898b\u5e74\u5e7c\u7684\u751f\u547d\u4e0d\u6575\u6b98\u9177\u7684\u6b7b\u795e\u6642\uff0c\u4ecd\u5fcd\u4e0d\u4f4f\u6703\u50b7\u5fc3\u6d41\u6dda\u3002\u9019\u4ea6\u662f\u70ba\u4f55\u937e\u91ab\u751f\u5728\u6559\u5b78\u4e0a\u5c0d\u5b78\u751f\u56b4\u683c\uff0c\u671f\u671b\u4ee5\u81ea\u5df1\u8eab\u6559\uff0c\u88dd\u5099\u91ab\u751f\u5b78\u8fce\u63a5\u8f9b\u82e6\u7684\u884c\u91ab\u4e4b\u8def\u3002<\/p>\n<p>\u5728\u81e8\u5e8a\u670d\u52d9\u3001\u6559\u5b78\u53ca\u5b78\u8853\u7814\u7a76\u4e0a\uff0c\u937e\u91ab\u751f\u90fd\u4e0d\u907a\u9918\u529b\u5730\u8ca2\u737b\u9999\u6e2f\u907a\u50b3\u5b78\u53ca\u57fa\u56e0\u7d44\u5b78\u7684\u767c\u5c55\uff0c\u4ea6\u5728\u7f55\u75c5\u653f\u7b56\u4e0a\u4f5c\u5404\u65b9\u9762\u6e9d\u901a\u7684\u6a4b\u6a11\u3002\u4ed6\u5728\u77ed\u671f\u5167\u5c07\u6703\u6295\u8eab\u9999\u6e2f\u57fa\u56e0\u7d44\u8a08\u5283\uff0c\u5e36\u9818\u672c\u5730\u7684\u79d1\u7814\u4eba\u54e1\u5efa\u7acb\u884c\u5927\u578b\u57fa\u56e0\u7d44\u6e2c\u5e8f\u8a08\u5283\uff0c\u5960\u5b9a\u672c\u5730\u57fa\u56e0\u7d44\u91ab\u5b78\u7684\u57fa\u790e\uff0c\u4fc3\u9032\u672c\u5730\u7684\u4eba\u624d\u57f9\u8a13\u53ca\u5c0d\u4e9e\u6d32\u4eba\u7684\u75be\u75c5\u7814\u7a76\u3002<\/p>\n<p>\u7576\u5e74\u4ecd\u662f\u9752\u6f80\u91ab\u5b78\u751f\u7684\u937e\u91ab\u751f\uff0c\u9762\u5c0d\u8457\u5c24\u5fb7\u7235\u58eb\u7d00\u5ff5\u57fa\u91d1\u6703\u7684\u9762\u8a66\u6559\u6388\u6642\uff0c\u56e0\u8457\u4ed6\u5011\u7686\u4f86\u81ea\u91ab\u5b78\u80cc\u666f\uff0c\u4ee5\u53ca\u6559\u6388\u771f\u5207\u7684\u8046\u807d\uff0c\u937e\u91ab\u751f\u5728\u4ed6\u5011\u9762\u524d\u53ef\u4ee5\u4f83\u4f83\u800c\u8ac7\uff0c\u5206\u4eab\u81ea\u5df1\u5728\u91ab\u5b78\u9662\u7684\u7d93\u6b77\u3002\u5f97\u734e\u63a5\u8fd1\u4e8c\u5341\u5e74\u5f8c\u7684\u4eca\u5929\uff0c\u8ac7\u8d77\u5176\u7fd2\u91ab\u4e4b\u8def\uff0c\u8207\u75c5\u4eba\u7684\u9ede\u6ef4\uff0c\u4ed6\u4ecd\u662f\u61f7\u8457\u6eff\u8154\u71b1\u8aa0\uff0c\u6295\u5165\u5728\u81e8\u5e8a\u670d\u52d9\u3001\u5b78\u8853\u7814\u7a76\u53ca\u6559\u6388\u4e0b\u4e00\u4ee3\u4e4b\u4e2d\u3002<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The
