Constantly engage in scientific research is never easy, it requires a large amount of time and effort to confront with uncertainties. The recipient of Sir Edward Youde Memorial Fellowships in 2001\/02, the Assistant Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Prof. Alfred Cheng has directed his path in scientific research by his respected mentor during his doctoral degree; he is now one of the pioneers in developing new treatments for liver cancer.<\/p>\n

Prof. Cheng\u2019s keen interest in genetics was developed back in secondary school. After completing his bachelor\u2019s degree in Biology and MPhil in Orthopaedics and Traumatology in CUHK, he was intrigued to look further into the mechanisms of human diseases. He pursued his PhD study at the same university later on and was very honored to be the first PhD student of Prof. Joseph Sung, a world-renowned medical scientist. During his postdoctoral training at Ohio State University, he was introduced to an emerging field in medical science, epigenetics, which later became one of his most vital important research directions on liver cancer. Three years later, he returned to his alma mater to kick start his research career.<\/p>\n

By definition, epigenetics refers to changes in gene expressions without any alterations in the genetic sequences. Compared to conventional genetics that changes the genetic codes, this kind of gene regulation is reversible and allows us to modulate gene expression more readily so as to facilitate disease control. Inspired by Prof. Sung, he was curious about why men are more prone to liver cancer, and aimed to study the underlying epigenetic regulation.<\/p>\n

With the vision to translate the discovery of epigenetics to clinical application, Prof. Cheng has risen to the challenge to transcend the currently available therapeutic solutions. To improve the efficacy of immunotherapy, he makes use of the uniqueness of epigenetics to alter the functioning of the immune system, thus changing the microenvironment of liver tumour. His latest study showed that tumors could eradicate in laboratory mice with prolonged survival over a year by a new epigenetic therapy. Even when the cancer cells were re-injected into the liver of the mice, their recurrence rate could be largely reduced because of its enhanced immune system.<\/p>\n

Even though he has brought a scientific breakthrough to the field, he said that his proudest moment had yet to come. His goal is to apply it into the clinical practice and bring hope to the patients. Currently, his team is collaborating with European medical institutions for drug development based on his discoveries. He hopes that this ambitious goal will soon be realized.<\/p>\n

Prof. Cheng admitted there were low times during his research, particularly at the initial stage, when repetitive experiments must be done every day. Despite the slim chance (as little as 0.1%) of making a breakthrough, his fascination with scientific discovery motivated him to anticipate the next 0.1% down the road. Looking back, he is thankful for his mentor\u2019s guidance and continuous support, such that he could be back on track whenever he got lost throughout the years. As a teacher himself, he would not forget the difficulties he has gone through. He keeps his students motivated by showing them the bigger picture ahead, instead of solely focusing on countless experiments.<\/p>\n

Prof. Cheng was nominated by his respected teacher, Prof. Sung, for the Sir Edward Youde Memorial Fellowships. As one of his earliest awards, the scholarship serves as an endorsement and encouragement, assuring him that doing research is the right path to pursue. Today, he is one of the principal investigators in the School of Biomedical Sciences at CUHK, leading a team of researchers and students. He still engraves the exemplary guidance from Prof. Sung \u2013 being considerate of others rather than oneself \u2013 with a hope of passing the spirit of generosity to the next generation of scientists.<\/p>\n

\u5f9e\u4e8b\u79d1\u7814\u5de5\u4f5c\u5f80\u5f80\u8017\u6642\u8cbb\u529b\uff0c\u904e\u7a0b\u4e2d\u4e5f\u5145\u6eff\u7a2e\u7a2e\u4e0d\u78ba\u5b9a\u56e0\u7d20\u3002\u5c24\u5fb7\u7235\u58eb\u7d00\u5ff5\u57fa\u91d1\u7814\u7a76\u751f\u734e\u5b78\u91d1 2001\/02\u5e74\u5f97\u734e\u8005\uff0c\u9999\u6e2f\u4e2d\u6587\u5927\u5b78\u91ab\u5b78\u9662\u52a9\u7406\u9662\u9577\u912d\u8a69\u6a02\u6559\u6388\uff0c\u5728\u4fee\u8b80\u535a\u58eb\u8ab2\u7a0b\u671f\u9593\u5f97\u5230\u6069\u5e2b\u555f\u8499\uff0c\u5f9e\u800c\u5960\u5b9a\u4e86\u81ea\u5df1\u7684\u7814\u7a76\u65b9\u5411\uff0c\u81f4\u529b\u70ba\u75c5\u4eba\u5e36\u4f86\u5e0c\u671b\u3002<\/p>\n

\u912d\u6559\u6388\u65e9\u5728\u4e2d\u5b78\u6642\u671f\u5df2\u7d93\u5c0d\u907a\u50b3\u5b78\u6709\u6fc3\u539a\u7684\u8208\u8da3\uff0c\u7562\u696d\u5f8c\u5230\u9999\u6e2f\u4e2d\u6587\u5927\u5b78\u4fee\u8b80\u751f\u7269\u5b78\u672c\u79d1\u53ca\u9aa8\u79d1\u7814\u7a76\u78a9\u58eb\uff0c\u671f\u9593\u958b\u59cb\u5c0d\u4eba\u9ad4\u76f8\u95dc\u7684\u75be\u75c5\u6a5f\u5236\u611f\u8208\u8da3\uff0c\u66f4\u6709\u5e78\u6210\u70ba\u4e16\u754c\u77e5\u540d\u7684\u91ab\u5b78\u5bb6\u6c88\u7956\u582f\u6559\u6388\u7684\u7b2c\u4e00\u4f4d\u535a\u58eb\u751f\u3002\u6b64\u5f8c\u4ed6\u5728\u4fc4\u4ea5\u4fc4\u5dde\u7acb\u5927\u5b78\u7e7c\u7e8c\u535a\u58eb\u5f8c\u7814\u7a76\u6642\u63a5\u89f8\u5230\u8868\u89c0\u907a\u50b3\u5b78\uff0c\u9019\u5176\u5f8c\u6210\u70ba\u4e86\u4ed6\u5728\u809d\u764c\u7814\u7a76\u4e2d\u7684\u91cd\u8981\u65b9\u5411\u3002\u4e09\u5e74\u5f8c\uff0c\u4ed6\u518d\u6b21\u52a0\u5165\u4e2d\u6587\u5927\u5b78\uff0c\u6b63\u5f0f\u958b\u5c55\u4ed6\u5728\u6bcd\u6821\u7684\u7814\u7a76\u751f\u6daf\u3002<\/p>\n

\u8868\u89c0\u907a\u50b3\u5b78\uff0c\u662f\u5728\u4e0d\u6539\u8b8a\u57fa\u56e0\u5e8f\u5217\u7684\u524d\u63d0\u4e0b\uff0c\u4ee4\u57fa\u56e0\u8868\u9054\u6709\u6240\u8b8a\u5316\u3002\u76f8\u5c0d\u65bc\u6539\u8b8a\u57fa\u56e0\u6392\u5217\u7684\u50b3\u7d71\u907a\u50b3\u5b78\uff0c\u9019\u500b\u5d84\u65b0\u57fa\u56e0\u8abf\u63a7\u6a21\u5f0f\u662f\u53ef\u9006\u8f49\u7684\uff0c\u8b93\u6211\u5011\u66f4\u5bb9\u6613\u8abf\u7bc0\u57fa\u56e0\u8868\u9054\uff0c\u5f9e\u800c\u6539\u8b8a\u75be\u75c5\u767c\u5c55\u9032\u7a0b\u3002\u5728\u6c88\u7956\u582f\u6559\u6388\u7684\u555f\u767c\u4e0b\uff0c\u4ed6\u4e86\u89e3\u5230\u7537\u6027\u8f03\u5bb9\u6613\u60a3\u4e0a\u809d\u764c\u7684\u73fe\u8c61\uff0c\u56e0\u800c\u958b\u59cb\u5c08\u9580\u7814\u7a76\u809d\u764c\u7684\u6027\u5225\u5dee\u7570\u6a5f\u5236\uff0c\u8ddf\u8868\u89c0\u907a\u50b3\u5b78\u8abf\u63a7\u7684\u95dc\u4fc2\u3002<\/p>\n

\u76ee\u524d\uff0c\u912d\u6559\u6388\u81f4\u529b\u900f\u904e\u8868\u89c0\u907a\u50b3\u5b78\u63a7\u5236\u57fa\u56e0\u8868\u9054\uff0c\u7814\u7a76\u6cbb\u7642\u809d\u764c\u7684\u5168\u65b0\u65b9\u6cd5\uff0c\u6539\u8b8a\u809d\u764c\u7684\u5fae\u74b0\u5883\uff0c\u4ee4\u514d\u75ab\u6cbb\u7642\u66f4\u70ba\u6709\u6548\u3002\u6700\u65b0\u7684\u7814\u7a76\u986f\u793a\u4e00\u7a2e\u65b0\u7684\u8868\u89c0\u907a\u50b3\u5b78\u7642\u6cd5\u53ef\u4ee5\u6d88\u9664\u8001\u9f20\u7684\u809d\u816b\u7624\uff0c\u4f7f\u5176\u5b58\u6d3b\u7387\u8d85\u904e\u4e00\u5e74\uff1b\u5373\u4f7f\u628a\u816b\u7624\u7d30\u80de\u518d\u6b21\u653e\u5230\u8001\u9f20\u809d\u81df\uff0c\u5176\u764c\u75c7\u7684\u5fa9\u767c\u7387\u4e5f\u6703\u56e0\u9ad4\u5167\u589e\u5f37\u4e86\u7684\u514d\u75ab\u7cfb\u7d71\u800c\u5927\u5927\u6e1b\u4f4e\u3002
\n\u7e31\u4f7f\u5728\u7814\u7a76\u4e0a\u53d6\u5f97\u91cd\u5927\u7a81\u7834\uff0c\u912d\u6559\u6388\u4f9d\u7136\u5fc3\u6025\u5982\u71ce\u3002\u4ed6\u5e0c\u671b\u7814\u7a76\u6210\u679c\u80fd\u76e1\u5feb\u5e36\u5230\u81e8\u5e8a\u61c9\u7528\uff0c\u54ea\u6015\u53ea\u70ba\u4e00\u540d\u75c5\u4eba\u5e36\u4f86\u5e0c\u671b\uff0c\u90fd\u6703\u8b93\u4ed6\u611f\u5230\u7121\u6bd4\u6eff\u8db3\u3002\u76ee\u524d\uff0c\u912d\u6559\u6388\u7684\u5718\u968a\u6b63\u8ddf\u6b50\u6d32\u4e0d\u540c\u91ab\u7642\u6a5f\u69cb\u5408\u4f5c\u958b\u5c55\u85e5\u7269\u7814\u7a76\uff0c\u671f\u671b\u5728\u4e0d\u4e45\u7684\u5c07\u4f86\u9858\u671b\u6210\u771f\u3002<\/p>\n

\u912d\u6559\u6388\u5766\u8a00\uff0c\u7814\u7a76\u904e\u7a0b\u4e26\u975e\u4e00\u5e06\u98a8\u9806\uff0c\u5c24\u5176\u5728\u7814\u7a76\u521d\u671f\uff0c\u6bcf\u5929\u90fd\u9700\u8981\u505a\u8a31\u591a\u7e41\u8907\u7684\u5be6\u9a57\uff0c\u96d6\u7136\u53ea\u67090.1%\u7684\u6a5f\u6703\u6709\u7a81\u7834\uff0c\u4f46\u6191\u8457\u5c0d\u79d1\u5b78\u767c\u73fe\u7684\u671f\u76fc\uff0c\u4fbf\u6709\u4e0d\u65b7\u7b49\u5f85\u4e0b\u4e00\u500b0.1%\u7684\u52d5\u529b\u3002\u5728\u6f2b\u9577\u7684\u7814\u7a76\u904e\u7a0b\u4e2d\uff0c\u96e3\u514d\u6703\u611f\u5230\u8ff7\u5931\uff0c\u4ed6\u611f\u6fc0\u7576\u5e74\u80fd\u5920\u6709\u6069\u5e2b\u6307\u9ede\u53ca\u652f\u6301\uff0c\u4ee4\u4ed6\u53ef\u4ee5\u770b\u6e05\u695a\u7814\u7a76\u65b9\u5411\u3002\u800c\u73fe\u6642\u4ed6\u8eab\u70ba\u8001\u5e2b\uff0c\u6703\u8b93\u4e00\u773e\u5b78\u751f\u76ee\u5149\u653e\u5230\u66f4\u9060\u5927\u3001\u66f4\u5168\u9762\u7684\u767c\u5c55\u65b9\u5411\uff0c\u800c\u975e\u5c40\u9650\u65bc\u773c\u524d\u65e5\u5fa9\u4e00\u65e5\u7684\u5be6\u9a57\u3002<\/p>\n

\u63d0\u5230\u5c24\u5fb7\u7235\u58eb\u7d00\u5ff5\u57fa\u91d1\u7814\u7a76\u751f\u734e\u5b78\u91d1\u7684\u5f97\u734e\u7d93\u6b77\uff0c\u7576\u5e74\u6b63\u6b63\u662f\u6c88\u6559\u6388\u63a8\u85a6\u4ed6\u7533\u8acb\u734e\u5b78\u91d1\u3002\u9019\u662f\u912d\u6559\u6388\u5728\u65e9\u671f\u7814\u7a76\u751f\u6daf\u4e2d\u7684\u91cd\u8981\u734e\u9805\uff0c\u800c\u734e\u5b78\u91d1\u5c0d\u4ed6\u7684\u8a8d\u540c\u548c\u9f13\u52f5\uff0c\u66f4\u4ee4\u4ed6\u5805\u4fe1\u9078\u64c7\u79d1\u7814\u7684\u9053\u8def\u662f\u6b63\u78ba\u7684\u3002\u4eca\u5929\uff0c\u4ed6\u5728\u4e2d\u6587\u5927\u5b78\u751f\u7269\u91ab\u5b78\u9662\u5e36\u9818\u8457\u5341\u591a\u4eba\u7684\u5718\u968a\uff1b\u4e00\u76f4\u9298\u8a18\u6c88\u6559\u6388\u7684\u5178\u7bc4\uff0c\u4e26\u671f\u671b\u628a\u5f85\u4eba\u4ee5\u5bec\uff0c\u5f8b\u5df1\u4ee5\u56b4\u7684\u7cbe\u795e\u50b3\u7d66\u4e0b\u4e00\u4ee3\u7684\u79d1\u5b78\u5bb6\u3002<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
