It is almost unheard of any technological product to bear the \u201cMade in Hong Kong\u201d branding. The recipient of Sir Edward Youde Memorial Fellowships in 1998\/1999, the CEO of Belun Technology, Dr. Lydia Leung, challenges this notion by investing a fortune to start manufacturing biotechnology products locally, determined to build a proud tech brand known from Hong Kong.<\/p>\n

Driven by her great interest in science, she discovered her passion in the field of electronic engineering after being exposed to laboratory work. Before working in healthcare technology, Dr Lydia Leung studied her Bachelor and Master degree in Electronic Engineering, and finally her PhD from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. After graduating from her Master degree, she originally set out to work on wireless systems as a system designer in a startup company, but she was ultimately convinced to further pursue a PhD by her love of research. After her extensive studies, Dr. Leung joined the Applied Science and Technology Research Institute (\u201cASTRI\u201d) and worked there for 11 years, during which she specialized in converting research work into commercialized products. However, she found a major hurdle in pursuing her passion while at ASTRI that it was extremely difficult to create successful technological products that can penetrate the market.
\nDuring the time, Dr. Leung was invited by two of her former colleagues to be the consultant of Belun Technology, a biotechnology startup company. She officially joined the company after she realized the potential of the company. It is not a simple feat for any biotech company to succeed \u2013 at the time when the company was founded, there were already several market leaders dominating the market of wearable devices. Therefore, they decided to restructure the company and develop medical devices. Studies showed that poor sleeping quality is one of the risk factors leading to many chronic diseases. Therefore, they decided to develop a product to detect sleep apnea, which is associated with hypertension, heart failure, stroke and obesity, etc. Their flagship product, the Belun Ring, allows patients to conduct the sleeping test at home, which can measure oxygen saturation, pulse rate, Apnea Hypopnea Index (bAHI), sleep stages, autonomic nervous system responses and motion. The data will be transferred from the rings to the back-end database, while diagnoses are made through Artificial Intelligence (\u201cAI\u201d) models. Unlike conventional sleeping tests conducted in hospitals, in which the oximeter is neither uncomfortable nor stable, the ring is simple and easy to wear, so that patients can conduct the test in a familiar environment. Most notably, according to studies conducted in the US, the ring can perform preliminary screening and analysis for sleep apnea and other conditions such as arrhythmia and stress on its own with the help of artificial intelligence, reducing the usage of 70% of the queuing time for sleep beds, allowing healthcare services to direct more resources to treat patients in need. In just a few years since the establishment, The Belun Ring has obtained the approval from the US Food & Drug Administration (\u201cFDA\u201d), becoming the world\u2019s first medical-grade wearable device. The ring is recognized by the medical community and the application is across medical institutions in Southeast Asia and the US.<\/p>\n

In the coming years, Dr. Leung aspires for the Belun Ring to expand its coverage as a common household device to help more people monitor their health status and provide health tips and alerts. To achieve this, Belun Technology is considering releasing the consumer version of the Belun Ring with medical-grade accuracy, so the ring will not be restricted to applications in medical sectors. Furthermore, the company is currently developing a chest pack detector, called the Belun Core, to investigate the utility of screening for abnormal blood pressure changes in combination with the Belun Ring. As a startup company, Belun Technology has already obtained Series A funding and is about to wrap up the Series B funding round. They will launch their IPO in the foreseeable future to obtain enough capital for future development.<\/p>\n

Apart from receiving the Sir Edward Youde Memorial Scholarship for Postgraduate Research Students, Dr. Leung has also received the Scholarship for her undergraduate studies. Nominated by the Engineering College, she had to demonstrate what she wanted to achieve through pursuing her Master degree during the interview. The scholarship serves as an endorsement and encouragement, assuring her that being an engineer is the right path to pursue.<\/p>\n

Dr. Leung was an active member in the Sir Edward Youde Scholars Association, formerly serving as the Vice Chairman. In the many years she has spent among Youders, her most unforgettable experience was organising English courses for immigrant students in the Social Service Team. She was involved in planning the event, preparing learning materials, as well as performing hands-on teaching. This was her first time organizing community activities where she found great satisfaction and meaning from her volunteer work. It has been 20 years since she has received the Scholarship, and she is still eager to contribute back to Hong Kong, no matter for the association or the community.<\/p>\n

\u96a8\u8457\u5de5\u696d\u5f0f\u5fae\uff0c\u300c\u9999\u6e2f\u88fd\u9020\u300d\u7684\u7522\u54c1\u8cb7\u5c11\u898b\u5c11\u3002\u5c24\u5fb7\u7235\u58eb\u7d00\u5ff5\u57fa\u91d1\u7814\u7a76\u751f\u734e\u5b78\u91d11998\/99\u5e74\u5f97\u734e\u8005\uff0c\u79d1\u7814\u516c\u53f8\u500d\u9748\u79d1\u6280\u6709\u9650\u516c\u53f8\u884c\u653f\u7e3d\u88c1\u6881\u7acb\u6167\u535a\u58eb\u70ba\u4e86\u63a8\u9ad8\u5ba2\u4eba\u7684\u4fe1\u5fc3\uff0c\u6bc5\u7136\u6295\u8cc7\u8fd1\u767e\u842c\u5143\u65bc\u672c\u6e2f\u8a2d\u5ee0\uff0c\u5805\u6301\u81ea\u5bb6\u7684\u91ab\u7642\u5668\u6750\u5fc5\u9700\u300c\u9999\u6e2f\u88fd\u9020\u300d\uff0c\u91cd\u65b0\u5efa\u7acb\u5c6c\u65bc\u9999\u6e2f\u7684\u54c1\u724c\u3002<\/p>\n

\u6881\u535a\u58eb\u81ea\u5c0f\u5c0d\u79d1\u5b78\u6709\u8457\u7684\u6975\u5927\u8208\u8da3\uff0c\u5728\u4e2d\u516d\u6642\u5979\u53c3\u52a0\u4e86\u5230\u9999\u6e2f\u57ce\u5e02\u5927\u5b78\u4e00\u500b\u8208\u8da3\u5c0f\u7d44\u4e2d\uff0c\u767c\u73fe\u81ea\u5df1\u5c0d\u96fb\u5b50\u5de5\u7a0b\u7684\u559c\u597d\uff0c\u6881\u535a\u58eb\u56e0\u800c\u9078\u4fee\u4e86\u9999\u6e2f\u79d1\u6280\u5927\u5b78\u7684\u96fb\u5b50\u5de5\u7a0b\u5b78\u58eb\u5b78\u4f4d\uff0c\u4e26\u9032\u4fee\u81f3\u78a9\u58eb\u3002\u5728\u77ed\u66ab\u7684\u6295\u5165\u8077\u5834\u5f8c\uff0c\u5979\u767c\u73fe\u81ea\u5df1\u5c0d\u7814\u7a76\u66f4\u611f\u8208\u8da3\uff0c\u6240\u4ee5\u5979\u56de\u5230\u79d1\u6280\u5927\u5b78\u4fee\u8b80\u535a\u58eb\u5b78\u4f4d\u3002\u5979\u5728\u535a\u58eb\u7562\u696d\u5f8c\u6295\u8eab\u9999\u6e2f\u61c9\u7528\u79d1\u6280\u7814\u7a76\u9662\uff0c\u5979\u7684\u8077\u8cac\u5305\u62ec\u4f7f\u79d1\u6280\u7522\u696d\u5316\uff0c\u64f4\u5927\u7522\u696d\u61c9\u7528\u300211\u5e74\u5f8c\uff0c\u5979\u6709\u611f\u53bb\u5de5\u696d\u5316\u4f7f\u696d\u754c\u96e3\u4ee5\u61c9\u7528\u7814\u7a76\u9662\u7684\u6280\u8853\uff0c\u4e0d\u5c11\u9805\u76ee\u80ce\u6b7b\u8179\u4e2d\uff0c\u4f7f\u5979\u5e0c\u671b\u5728\u5176\u4ed6\u6e20\u9053\u63a8\u52d5\u9999\u6e2f\u7684\u5275\u79d1\u767c\u5c55\u3002<\/p>\n

\u78b0\u5de7\uff0c\u7576\u6642\u5169\u540d\u820a\u540c\u4e8b\u5275\u8fa6\u4e86\u500d\u9748\u79d1\u6280\uff0c\u6881\u535a\u58eb\u53d7\u9080\u6210\u70ba\u8a72\u516c\u53f8\u9867\u554f\uff0c\u5728\u770b\u5230\u516c\u53f8\u7684\u6f5b\u529b\u5f8c\u5979\u6b63\u5f0f\u52a0\u5165\u500d\u9748\u79d1\u6280\u3002\u7576\u521d\uff0c\u516c\u53f8\u5e0c\u671b\u767c\u5c55\u53ef\u7a7f\u6234\u8a2d\u5099\u7684\u5e02\u5834\uff0c\u4f46\u7576\u6642\u5e02\u5834\u4e0a\u53ef\u7a7f\u6234\u8a2d\u5099\u7684\u5e02\u5834\u5df2\u7d93\u767c\u5c55\u6210\u719f\uff0c\u7522\u54c1\u96e3\u4ee5\u8207\u4e00\u4e9b\u8de8\u570b\u54c1\u724c\u7af6\u722d\u3002\u56e0\u6b64\uff0c\u4ed6\u5011\u6c7a\u5b9a\u91cd\u7d44\u516c\u53f8\uff0c\u6c7a\u5fc3\u767c\u5c55\u91ab\u7528\u7d1a\u8a2d\u5099\u3002\u6700\u7d42\uff0c\u4ed6\u5011\u767c\u73fe\u5f88\u591a\u7684\u6162\u6027\u75c5\u90fd\u7531\u7761\u7720\u800c\u5f15\u8d77\uff0c\u4ed6\u5011\u56e0\u800c\u9078\u5b9a\u767c\u5c55\u53ef\u4ee5\u6aa2\u6e2c\u8207\u9ad8\u8840\u58d3\u3001\u5fc3\u81df\u8870\u7aed\u3001\u7b49\u6709\u95dc\u7684\u7761\u7720\u7a92\u606f\u75c7\u7522\u54c1\u3002\u73fe\u6642\uff0c\u300c\u500d\u9748\u6307\u74b0\u300d\u662f\u4ed6\u5011\u7684\u65d7\u8266\u7522\u54c1\uff0c\u60a3\u8005\u53ef\u4ee5\u5728\u5bb6\u4e2d\u6234\u4e0a\u4ed6\u5011\u6307\u74b0\u91cf\u5ea6\u8840\u6c27\u98fd\u548c\u5ea6\u3001\u8108\u640f\u7387\u3001\u7761\u7720\u7a92\u606f\u6307\u6578\u7b49\u6578\u64da\uff0c\u6578\u64da\u5f9e\u6307\u74b0\u50b3\u8f38\u5230\u5f8c\u7aef\u7684\u6578\u64da\u5eab\uff0c\u518d\u900f\u904e\u4eba\u5de5\u667a\u80fd\u6a21\u578b\u4f5c\u51fa\u8a3a\u65b7\u3002\u76f8\u6bd4\u8d77\u5230\u91ab\u9662\u9032\u884c\u7761\u7720\u6e2c\u8a66\uff0c\u9700\u8981\u628a\u8840\u6c27\u76e3\u6e2c\u5100\u593e\u65bc\u624b\u6307\u982d\uff0c\u6307\u74b0\u7a7f\u6234\u66f4\u8212\u9069\u65b9\u4fbf\uff0c\u800c\u4e14\u60a3\u8005\u66f4\u5bb9\u6613\u5728\u719f\u8b58\u7684\u74b0\u5883\u5165\u7761\uff0c\u4f7f\u6e2c\u8a66\u8b8a\u5f97\u5bb9\u6613\u3002\u64da\u4ed6\u5011\u5728\u7f8e\u570b\u7684\u7814\u7a76\u767c\u73fe\uff0c\u6307\u74b0\u53ef\u70ba\u7591\u4f3c\u7761\u7720\u7a92\u606f\u7684\u75c5\u4eba\u9032\u884c\u521d\u6b65\u7be9\u67e5\uff0c\u6210\u529f\u6e1b\u4f4e\u7761\u7720\u6e2c\u8a667\u6210\u7684\u9700\u6c42\uff0c\u4f7f\u91ab\u7642\u7cfb\u7d71\u80fd\u66f4\u96c6\u4e2d\u8cc7\u6e90\u670d\u52d9\u6709\u9700\u8981\u7684\u75c5\u4eba\u3002\u5728\u516c\u53f8\u6210\u7acb\u7684\u77ed\u77ed\u5e7e\u5e74\u9593\uff0c\u6307\u74b0\u66f4\u7372\u5f97\u7f8e\u570b\u98df\u7269\u53ca\u85e5\u7269\u7ba1\u7406\u5c40\u7684\u8a8d\u8b49\uff0c\u6210\u70ba\u5168\u7403\u9996\u6b3e\u9054\u5230\u91ab\u7642\u7b49\u7d1a\u7684\u53ef\u7a7f\u6234\u8a2d\u5099\uff0c\u4f7f\u7522\u54c1\u7372\u5f97\u91ab\u5b78\u754c\u4eba\u58eb\u7684\u8a8d\u53ef\uff0c\u73fe\u6642\u6307\u74b0\u7684\u5df2\u88ab\u6771\u5357\u4e9e\u53ca\u7f8e\u570b\u7b49\u91ab\u7642\u6a5f\u69cb\u61c9\u7528\u3002<\/p>\n

\u5728\u672a\u4f86\u7684\u65e5\u5b50\uff0c\u6881\u535a\u58eb\u5e0c\u671b\u6307\u74b0\u80fd\u6210\u70ba\u7528\u5bb6\u65e5\u5e38\u7684\u9ad4\u6aa2\u5100\u5668\uff0c\u70ba\u4ed6\u5011\u76e3\u5bdf\u8eab\u9ad4\u7684\u72c0\u6cc1\uff0c\u53ca\u65e9\u63a1\u53d6\u9810\u9632\u63aa\u65bd\u3002\u70ba\u6b64\uff0c\u516c\u53f8\u5373\u5c07\u63a8\u51fa\u5bb6\u7528\u7248\u6307\u74b0\uff0c\u4f7f\u6307\u74b0\u7684\u61c9\u7528\u4e0d\u518d\u4fb7\u9650\u65bc\u91ab\u7642\u6a5f\u69cb\uff0c\u516c\u53f8\u7522\u54c1\u7684\u63a5\u89f8\u5c64\u9762\u66f4\u52a0\u5ee3\u95ca\u3002\u53e6\u4e00\u65b9\u9762\uff0c\u4ed6\u5011\u6b63\u5728\u7814\u767c\u4e00\u584a\u8cbc\u5728\u80f8\u8154\u7684\u611f\u61c9\u5668\uff0c\u671f\u671b\u5c07\u5169\u8005\u7d50\u5408\u4f86\u5075\u6e2c\u8840\u58d3\u8b8a\u5316\u3002\u800c\u5728\u878d\u8cc7\u4e0a\uff0c\u4f5c\u70ba\u4e00\u500b\u751f\u7269\u79d1\u6280\u521d\u5275\u516c\u53f8\uff0c\u4ed6\u5011\u5fc5\u9808\u5728\u524d\u671f\u6295\u5165\u5de8\u984d\u7684\u8cc7\u91d1\u4f5c\u7522\u54c1\u7814\u767c\u3002\u7576\u4ed6\u5011\u5728\u7522\u54c1\u6210\u529f\u7814\u767c\uff0c\u4ed6\u5011\u5728\u5169\u5e74\u524d\u7372\u5f97A\u8f2a\u878d\u8cc7\uff0c\u4e26\u5373\u5c07\u5b8c\u6210B\u8f2a\u878d\u8cc7\u3002\u4ed6\u5011\u6703\u5728\u53ef\u898b\u7684\u5c07\u4f86\u9032\u884c\u4e0a\u5e02\uff0c\u7c4c\u96c6\u8cc7\u91d1\u4ee5\u7e7c\u7e8c\u767c\u5c55\u5f8c\u7aef\u7684\u7cfb\u7d71\u3002<\/p>\n
