Youders\u2019 Story \u2013 Ms. Michelle Siu

\u201cWhen God closes a door, He opens a window.\u201d The recipient of Sir Edward Youde Memorial Scholarship for Disabled Students in 2017\/18, Ms. Michelle Siu, was diagnosed with ocular cancer when she was just an infant. Yet because of that, her musical potential was unearthed. After years of immense effort and paying ten times more effort than others, she is now an outstanding soprano. Michelle was even elected as the Ten Outstanding Young Persons in 2020. She wishes to encourage more young people to shine in their own unique ways by music and her contribution to Hong Kong was recognised by the Panel of Judges.
When Michelle was a three-month-old baby, her parents brought her to the Maternal and Child Health Centre to be assessed. A nurse put toys in front of her. But unlike other kids, she did not grab the toys. When the nurse used a torch to examine her eyes, she also did not react to the strong lighting. Nevertheless, she was only labelled as \u201cunresponsive to light\u201d.
As her parents were worried about her situation, they brought baby Michelle to a pediatrician, who suspected that it might be a serious condition and would require immediate treatment. The pediatrician arranged further medical checkups and after a thorough examination, she was diagnosed to have eye cancer. Doctors advised her parents to undergo the enucleation of the eyeball immediately in order to save her life. Struggling between keeping her eyesight and saving her life, her parents made the difficult decision of choosing the latter, agreeing to the surgery being conducted as soon as possible.
After the surgery, her parents intended to train her hearing. She still remembers her favorite toy at that time – a toy piano, which was accidentally damaged when she was playing it while having congee. Coincidentally, Her neighbor had been hiring a piano teacher when she started to develop enthusiasm towards music. The piano teacher led the beginning of Michelle\u2019s magical journey with music. Her piano teacher discovered her talent in singing when she was ten. Later, the teacher asked a friend to teach Michelle singing, making her a soprano.
When Michelle was four years old, she studied at Ebenezer School & Home for the visually impaired to learn skills like braille. After graduation from primary school , she transferred to St. Stephen\u2019s Girls\u2019 College to get into mainstream education. Her biggest difficulty during her secondary school years was to get satisfactory results in the four core subjects, a prerequisite to get into a university. For instance, she needed to devote much time to study Mathematics, despite the fact that she had aspired to study music since she was a junior form student. Apart from that, as she began to be recognised through her life story, she received many invitations to various events and performances, leaving less time for her learning. Seeing her falling behind her academics, her secondary school teacher warmly reminded her to spend more time on studying, otherwise, she would be unlikely to get into university. It was a wakeup call to her. Since then, she had focused on studying and canceled all the performances and charity events. By doing so, she eventually received admission offers from three universities. Knowing that studying at CUHK can let her take courses apart from the music curriculum, she decided to attend CUHK with a major in music. She also studied Italian, German and even Chinese women’s history courses.
During the pandemic, Michelle does not get as many opportunities to perform as before. But she utilised this period to reflect on herself and refined her skills in performing different types of songs. Her beautiful voice was what audiences were attracted to but she found herself less able to express her emotions through singing because of the limitations in her singing techniques. Thus, she used almost six months to practise different ways of performing. Coupled with her unique experiences, the audience can better understand the deeper meanings of songs.
Looking forward, Michelle endeavours to devote in music. Apart from singing, she is steppin into the new world of composition and writing Cantonese lyrics. Recently, she has made a song \u201cYou are heroes\u201d to show appreciation to all the medical staff for their hard work during the pandemic. She was also invited to sing the theme song of a movie, \u201cSunshine of My life\u201d. Music aside, she hopes to contribute to children’s education and integrated education. She pointed out that mainstream schools in Hong Kong place too much emphasis on academic results instead of paying attention to moral education. She also realised from her own experience that mainstream education emphasizes the needs of the disabled children, but not exploring their ability. Therefore, she hopes that integrated education can unearth potentials of the disabled, enhancing their confidence and contribution to society.
Michelle was awarded with the Sir Edward Youde Memorial Scholarship for Disabled Students in 2018, when she was studying music at CUHK as a Year 2 student. In the Award Presentation Ceremony, she met the teacher who reminded her to concentrate on study. Although she could not see the facial expression of her teacher, she could feel that the teacher was proud of her. She was extremely thankful for receiving the scholarship as it was a recognition of her efforts and instilled great motivation in her to become a professional musician. This scholarship is also the very few ones targeting the disabled, she noted, and such a way would promote equity among able and disabled people.
In the eyes of others, Michelle has been a disabled person since she was born, but not in her parents’. She is thankful for the care that her parents showered her throughout the years and for never treating her as a disabled person. They nurtured her in a way just as an able-bodied person would be nurtured. She actively participates in charitable events, including fundraising concerts and visits to less developed regions. She hopes to use her life to affect lives and encourage the disadvantaged to be hopeful.<\/p>\r\n
\u300c\u4e0a\u5929\u95dc\u4e86\u4e00\u6247\u9580\uff0c\u5fc5\u5b9a\u6703\u70ba\u4f60\u6253\u958b\u53e6\u4e00\u6247\u7a97\u3002\u300d\u5c24\u5fb7\u7235\u58eb\u7d00\u5ff5\u57fa\u91d1\u6b98\u75be\u5b78\u751f\u734e\u5b78\u91d12017\/18\u5e74\u5f97\u734e\u8005\u856d\u51f1\u6069\u5c0f\u59d0\u5c1a\u5728\u8941\u8913\u4e4b\u6642\u5c31\u56e0\u60a3\u4e0a\u773c\u764c\u800c\u5931\u53bb\u8996\u529b\uff0c\u4f46\u537b\u56e0\u800c\u767c\u6398\u5230\u5979\u5728\u97f3\u6a02\u65b9\u9762\u7684\u5929\u8ce6\uff0c\u7d42\u5728\u4ed8\u51fa\u6bd4\u4e00\u822c\u4eba\u591a\u5341\u500d\u7684\u52aa\u529b\u4e4b\u4e0b\u6210\u70ba\u4e86\u4e00\u540d\u5973\u9ad8\u97f3\u6b4c\u5531\u5bb6\u3002\u51f1\u6069\u66f4\u65bc2020\u5e74\u7372\u9078\u9999\u6e2f\u5341\u5927\u5091\u51fa\u9752\u5e74\u69ae\u8b7d\uff0c\u5979\u5e0c\u671b\u900f\u904e\u97f3\u6a02\u9f13\u52f5\u66f4\u591a\u9752\u5e74\u4eba\u5728\u4eba\u751f\u821e\u53f0\u4e0a\u7dbb\u653e\u5149\u8292\uff0c\u800c\u5979\u5c0d\u9999\u6e2f\u793e\u6703\u7684\u8ca2\u737b\u88ab\u8a55\u5be9\u4e00\u81f4\u80af\u5b9a\u3002<\/p>\r\n
\u5728\u51f1\u6069\u4e09\u500b\u6708\u5927\u6642\uff0c\u7236\u6bcd\u5e36\u5979\u5230\u6bcd\u5b30\u5065\u5eb7\u9662\u9032\u884c\u6aa2\u67e5\u3002\u7576\u8b77\u58eb\u628a\u73a9\u5177\u653e\u5728\u5979\u9762\u524d\uff0c\u5979\u4e0d\u50cf\u5176\u4ed6\u5b30\u5152\u4e00\u6a23\u4f38\u624b\u8981\u62ff\uff0c\u8b77\u58eb\u518d\u7528\u96fb\u7b52\u76f4\u7167\u5979\u7684\u96d9\u773c\uff0c\u4ea6\u767c\u73fe\u5979\u7684\u96d9\u773c\u6c92\u6709\u53cd\u61c9\uff0c\u4f46\u53ea\u662f\u88ab\u5beb\u4e0b\u4e00\u53e5\u300c\u5c0d\u5149\u6c92\u6709\u53cd\u61c9\u300d\u3002\u5176\u5f8c\uff0c\u7236\u6bcd\u5e36\u5979\u5230\u4e00\u540d\u5152\u79d1\u91ab\u751f\u6aa2\u67e5\uff0c\u767c\u73fe\u5979\u7684\u96d9\u773c\u554f\u984c\u56b4\u91cd\uff0c\u7acb\u5373\u8f49\u4ecb\u5979\u5230\u773c\u79d1\u91ab\u9662\u4f5c\u8ddf\u9032\u3002\u9032\u4e00\u6b65\u6aa2\u67e5\u5f8c\uff0c\u91ab\u751f\u8a3a\u65b7\u51fa\u5979\u60a3\u4e0a\u773c\u764c\uff0c\u4e26\u5efa\u8b70\u5979\u5728\u7576\u665a\u63a5\u53d7\u773c\u7403\u6458\u9664\u624b\u8853\u3002\u7576\u6642\uff0c\u7236\u6bcd\u5e0c\u671b\u65e2\u80fd\u4fdd\u7559\u8996\u529b\uff0c\u4ea6\u80fd\u4fdd\u4f4f\u751f\u547d\uff0c\u4f46\u7531\u65bc\u764c\u7d30\u80de\u6709\u6a5f\u6703\u64f4\u6563\u81f3\u5176\u4ed6\u5668\u5b98\uff0c\u6700\u7d42\u4ed6\u5011\u7121\u5948\u6c7a\u5b9a\u70ba\u51f1\u6069\u6458\u9664\u773c\u7403\u3002
\u624b\u8853\u5f8c\uff0c\u51f1\u6069\u7684\u7236\u6bcd\u523b\u610f\u8a13\u7df4\u5979\u7684\u807d\u89ba\u3002\u5979\u9084\u8a18\u5f97\u5c0f\u6642\u5019\u5979\u5c0d\u4e00\u500b\u73a9\u5177\u7434\u611b\u4e0d\u91cb\u624b\uff0c\u66f4\u5728\u9032\u98df\u6642\u4e0d\u5e78\u628a\u7ca5\u6ef4\u5230\u7434\u4e2d\u800c\u5c0e\u81f4\u4e0d\u80fd\u904b\u4f5c\u3002\u78b0\u5de7\uff0c\u5979\u7684\u4e00\u4f4d\u9130\u5c45\u6b63\u5728\u5b78\u7434\uff0c\u5728\u8a62\u554f\u8a72\u540d\u8001\u5e2b\u80fd\u5426\u6559\u5c0e\u5979\u5f8c\uff0c\u51f1\u6069\u4fbf\u7a2e\u4e0b\u4e86\u5979\u548c\u97f3\u6a02\u7684\u4e0d\u89e3\u4e4b\u7de3\u3002\u5230\u5927\u7d04\u5341\u6b72\u6642\uff0c\u7576\u6642\u5979\u7684\u92fc\u7434\u8001\u5e2b\u807d\u5230\u5979\u6709\u5531\u6b4c\u65b9\u9762\u7684\u6f5b\u80fd\uff0c\u4fbf\u627e\u4f86\u4e00\u4f4d\u670b\u53cb\u505a\u5979\u7684\u5531\u6b4c\u8001\u5e2b\uff0c\u57f9\u990a\u5979\u6210\u70ba\u4e00\u540d\u5973\u9ad8\u97f3\u3002
\u51f1\u6069\u56db\u6b72\u6642\uff0c\u5979\u9032\u5165\u5fc3\u5149\u76f2\u4eba\u9662\u66a8\u5b78\u6821\u5b78\u7fd2\u9ede\u5b57\u53ca\u751f\u6d3b\u6280\u80fd\u3002\u5b8c\u6210\u5c0f\u5b78\u8ab2\u7a0b\u5f8c\uff0c\u5979\u8f49\u5230\u8056\u58eb\u63d0\u53cd\u5973\u5b50\u4e2d\u5b78\u5c31\u8b80\uff0c\u4ee5\u9069\u61c9\u4e3b\u6d41\u7684\u5b78\u696d\u74b0\u5883\u3002\u5979\u5766\u8a00\uff0c\u4e2d\u5b78\u6642\u9762\u5c0d\u6700\u5927\u7684\u56f0\u96e3\u662f\u9700\u8981\u5728\u6240\u6709\u4e3b\u79d1\u90fd\u53d6\u5f97\u4e0d\u4fd7\u7684\u6210\u7e3e\u624d\u80fd\u5347\u8b80\u5927\u5b78\u3002\u4ee5\u5979\u70ba\u4f8b\uff0c\u65e9\u5728\u521d\u4e2d\u5df2\u6c7a\u5fc3\u4fee\u8b80\u97f3\u6a02\uff0c\u4f46\u537b\u9700\u8981\u6295\u653e\u5927\u91cf\u5fc3\u6a5f\u6642\u9593\u5728\u6578\u5b78\u79d1\u3002\u53e6\u5916\uff0c\u7576\u6642\u51f1\u6069\u5df2\u8584\u6709\u540d\u6c23\uff0c\u7d93\u5e38\u61c9\u9080\u51fa\u5e2d\u4e0d\u540c\u7684\u6d3b\u52d5\u53ca\u8868\u6f14\uff0c\u56e0\u800c\u5206\u8584\u4e86\u6eab\u7fd2\u7684\u6642\u9593\u3002\u7576\u6642\u8001\u5e2b\u63d0\u9192\u5979\uff0c\u82e5\u4e0d\u591a\u82b1\u6642\u9593\u5728\u5b78\u696d\u4e0a\uff0c\u5347\u8b80\u5927\u5b78\u7684\u6a5f\u6703\u5c07\u6703\u8b8a\u5f97\u6e3a\u832b\u3002\u8001\u5e2b\u7684\u63d0\u9192\u5982\u7576\u982d\u68d2\u559d\uff0c\u51f1\u6069\u4e0b\u5b9a\u6c7a\u5fc3\uff0c\u53d6\u6d88\u6240\u6709\u8868\u6f14\u53ca\u6148\u5584\u6d3b\u52d5\uff0c\u5c08\u6ce8\u5b78\u696d\uff0c\u6700\u7d42\u7372\u5f97\u4e09\u9593\u9662\u6821\u7684\u53d6\u9304\u3002\u8003\u616e\u5230\u4e2d\u6587\u5927\u5b78\u53ef\u4ee5\u8b93\u5979\u5831\u8b80\u4e00\u4e9b\u97f3\u6a02\u4ee5\u5916\u7684\u8ab2\u7a0b\uff0c\u5979\u6c7a\u5b9a\u5165\u8b80\u8a72\u6821\u7684\u97f3\u6a02\u7cfb\u3002\u9664\u4e86\u97f3\u6a02\u7684\u77e5\u8b58\uff0c\u51f1\u6069\u4ea6\u9078\u8b80\u4e86\u610f\u5927\u5229\u8a9e\u3001\u5fb7\u8a9e\u3001\u4e43\u81f3\u4e2d\u570b\u5a66\u5973\u53f2\u7b49\u8ab2\u7a0b\u3002
\u75ab\u60c5\u671f\u9593\uff0c\u51f1\u6069\u7684\u8868\u6f14\u6a5f\u6703\u5927\u6e1b\u3002\u4f46\u5979\u537b\u5728\u9019\u6bb5\u6642\u9593\u53cd\u601d\uff0c\u4e26\u638c\u63e1\u5230\u8868\u6f14\u66f2\u76ee\u9700\u8981\u4e0d\u540c\u7684\u8868\u9054\u65b9\u5f0f\u3002\u4ee5\u5f80\uff0c\u51f1\u6069\u4f9d\u4ed7\u81ea\u5df1\u512a\u7f8e\u7684\u8072\u7dda\uff0c\u5728\u4e0d\u540c\u7684\u5834\u5408\u4ee5\u81ea\u5df1\u7684\u65b9\u5f0f\u9032\u884c\u6f14\u5531\u3002\u4f46\u8fd1\u5169\u5e74\uff0c\u5979\u81ea\u89ba\u6f14\u5531\u6280\u5de7\u6c92\u6709\u554f\u984c\uff0c\u4f46\u6240\u8868\u9054\u51fa\u4f86\u7684\u66f2\u76ee\u597d\u50cf\u6c92\u6709\u4e86\u611f\u60c5\u3002\u56e0\u6b64\uff0c\u5979\u7528\u4e86\u63a5\u8fd1\u534a\u5e74\u6642\u9593\u53bb\u947d\u7814\u4e0d\u540c\u7684\u8868\u9054\u65b9\u5f0f\uff0c\u7d50\u5408\u81ea\u5df1\u7684\u7d93\u6b77\uff0c\u8b93\u89c0\u773e\u63a5\u89f8\u5230\u66f2\u76ee\u6700\u6df1\u5c64\u7684\u542b\u610f\u3002

\u51f1\u6069\u65bc2018\u5e74\uff0c\u5c31\u8b80\u65bc\u4e2d\u6587\u5927\u5b78\u97f3\u6a02\u7cfb\u4e8c\u5e74\u7d1a\u6642\uff0c\u7372\u5f97\u5c24\u5fb7\u7235\u58eb\u7d00\u5ff5\u57fa\u91d1\u6b98\u75be\u5b78\u751f\u734e\u5b78\u91d1\u3002\u5728\u9812\u734e\u5178\u79ae\u4e0a\uff0c\u5979\u5076\u9047\u7576\u6642\u4e88\u5979\u4e00\u982d\u68d2\u559d\u7684\u4e2d\u5b78\u8001\u5e2b\u3002\u96d6\u7136\u5979\u770b\u4e0d\u898b\u8001\u5e2b\u7684\u81c9\u90e8\u8868\u60c5\uff0c\u4f46\u5979\u5207\u5207\u611f\u53d7\u5230\u8001\u5e2b\u70ba\u5979\u611f\u5230\u9a55\u50b2\u548c\u6b23\u6170\u3002\u5979\u5341\u5206\u611f\u6fc0\u734e\u5b78\u91d1\u5c0d\u5979\u7684\u4ed8\u51fa\u548c\u52aa\u529b\u4e88\u4ee5\u80af\u5b9a\uff0c\u540c\u6642\u8b93\u5979\u5805\u5b9a\u5730\u8d70\u4e0a\u97f3\u6a02\u7684\u9053\u8def\u3002\u5979\u6307\u51fa\uff0c\u793e\u6703\u4e0a\u7279\u5225\u70ba\u6b98\u75be\u4eba\u58eb\u800c\u8a2d\u7684\u734e\u5b78\u91d1\u5c48\u6307\u53ef\u6578\uff0c\u5c24\u5fb7\u7235\u58eb\u7d00\u5ff5\u57fa\u91d1\u6b98\u75be\u5b78\u751f\u734e\u5b78\u91d1\u662f\u5c11\u6578\u7279\u5225\u95dc\u6ce8\u6b98\u75be\u4eba\u58eb\u7684\u734e\u5b78\u91d1\u6a5f\u69cb\uff0c\u652f\u6301\u4e86\u793e\u6703\u7684\u5e73\u7b49\u767c\u5c55\u3002
