Ms. Ivy Lee was the recipient of the \u2018Sir Edward Youde Memorial Scholarship for Undergraduate Students\u2019 in 1994 \/ 1995, whilst at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (“CUHK”). Now as a practising Architect and the Managing Director of Leigh & Orange Limited, Ivy, shares her personal insight into how the scholarship provided her with support through her academic years and furthermore how is imprinted upon her the need to actively \u201cpay back\u201d to the community for the support she received and how it has inspired her to apply her skills and social values to support and nurture a wider sphere of society. Within the architectural and construction sector, she is an advocate for sustainable development and the necessity to cut-back on its significant contribution to total global energy-related CO2 emissions, whilst sharing her time and talents through her pro bono work to the education sector and in providing, through Leigh & Orange, scholarships to students studying architecture.<\/p>\r\n
Ivy exhibited a keen spatial awareness as a child through her interest in building models and a natural appreciation of and interest in the visual arts. Her uncle, who is also an Architect, recognised her natural ability and passion for design, and provided her with an insight into the world of architecture. Fortuitously she had the opportunity to visit construction sites during secondary school years and was able to have a glimpse of how design was turned into reality. It was no surprise that she was inspired to become an Architect. After graduating from high school, she studied for her Bachelor\u2019s degree in the Department of Architecture at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Progressing through to her Master\u2019s programme, she spent one year as an exchange student at the University of Washington in Seattle. Part of the Master\u2019s degree requires students to execute a final year project and to exhibit aspects of all of their other projects. Ivy was elected as the Chairperson for the exhibition and to exhibit her own projects, and shortly afterwards, following a brief conversation with a Principal Director from Leigh & Orange she was invited to join them.<\/p>\r\n
Since Ivy accepted the offer from Leigh and Orange in 1998, she has progressed from Assistant Project Designer through to Partner in 2009 \u2013 ten years after joining Leigh and Orange, and became the firm\u2019s first female Managing Director in 2017. The firm has a long and impressive history since its establishment in 1874, and it has witnessed and supported the transformation of Hong Kong from a small fishing village into an international metropolis, with many fundamental projects being undertaken by Leigh and Orange. In the early years, the firm\u2019s founders were involved in infrastructural projects such as Belcher\u2019s Bay Reclamation, the Tai Tam Reservoir, and several housing and education projects such as the Loke Yew Hall at the University of Hong Kong (“HKU”). Later, the rising living standards boosted the demand for leisure facilities, and the firm participated in Ocean Park and Jockey Club Racecourse projects. Ivy is proud of the company\u2019s history and the fact that it was fortunate to participate early on in the development of Hong Kong and that it still remains participatory in major development sectors at home, in addition to carrying-out international projects.<\/p>\r\n
Among many other projects that Ivy participated in, the two Hong Kong Science Park projects are imprinted upon her most strongly for personal as well as professional reasons:-<\/p>\r\n
The Science Park Phase 2 Development was her first large-scale project after joining the firm. It was a complex programme including two energy towers, eight research offices and laboratories as well as the iconic \u201cgolden egg\u201d auditorium. Despite input from other specialist consultants, her supervisor requested her to clearly understand all of these complex technical details and the corresponding integration and construction. From the connection of pipelines in each building to the communications, project management and lobbying required with the clients\u2019 team, this project allowed her to grow into a more independent and competent professional Architect dealing with the wide gamut of roles and responsibilities one finds throughout all stages of a project.<\/p>\r\n
Another memorable Science Park project is the recently completed \u201cInnoCell\u201d development. This is a pilot project for Hong Kong applying the principles of Modular Integrated Construction (MiC) in a high-rise building scenario. Whilst not new, this technique will promote innovations in the construction sector in Hong Kong and will lessen the pressure of labour shortage in the industry. Given the dense nature of Hong Kong and the prevailing building regulations, MiC faced huge challenges both technically and statutorily. This is a hurdle to every stakeholder in the industry, including Architects, Engineers, Surveyors and Contractors. As the Lead Architectural Consultant, Ivy was involved in every part of this project, from the conceptualisation of the design to its approach to prefabrication through to assembly and installation. Ivy\u2019s view is that this project has driven the entire industry to work together, promoted innovative construction methods and has set a benchmark for Hong Kong\u2019s development into a smarter and greener built environment.<\/p>\r\n
Returning to Ivy\u2019s desire to promote a sustainable development of the construction industry, she notes that the awareness of environmental protection has been more prevalent in the past two decades, and it has now quite rightly become the focus of national policy. In Leigh & Orange, sustainable development is one of the four core values of the company to which a sustainability team has been established to provide sustainable design to project teams. In addition to her professional commitments, she is also the Chairperson of the BEAM Society Limited. The society provides BEAM assessment to different construction projects in Hong Kong, encouraging the industry to build a greener Hong Kong and, in doing so, to achieve those reductions in energy-related CO2 emissions that the environment so desperately needs.<\/p>\r\n
Ivy was awarded the \u2018Sir Edward Youde Memorial Fund Scholarship\u2019 whilst completing her undergraduate studies. Pointing out that studying architecture is extremely costly with the expense of constructing physical building models, photography, materials, joining field trips, and self-initiated education imposed a substantial financial burden to her family and her in managing all available sources of finance. The scholarship significantly eased her financial burden and pressure, allowing her to focus more on her studies. Furthermore, the principle that the awardee of the scholarship should \u201cgive back\u201d to the society made for her a mission.<\/p>\r\n
Apart from promoting the sustainable development of the industry, she also established a scholarship in Leigh & Orange, amongst other scholarships to local tertiary institutes, to encourage students to seek overseas education through travel and exploration and to broaden their architectural horizons and life skills. It aims to enrich their experience through such exposure to world architecture and culture, and hence to invigorate their creativity and better prepare them for an architectural career at the highest professional level. Ivy also reminds us of the responsibility that is placed upon all recipients of the Sir Edward Youde Memorial Scholarship to \u201cpay back\u201d the generosity and faith bestowed upon them and to positively enrich the community and future generations of Architects, with whom they interact and mentor for the betterment of our entire society.<\/p>\r\n
\u674e\u5c11\u7a4e\u5973\u58eb\u65bc1994\/1995\u5e74\u5728\u9999\u6e2f\u4e2d\u6587\u5927\u5b78\u5f97\u5c24\u5fb7\u7235\u58eb\u7d00\u5ff5\u57fa\u91d1\u672c\u79d1\u751f\u734e\u5b78\u91d1\uff0c \u73fe\u6642\u5979\u662f\u4e00\u540d\u57f7\u696d\u5efa\u7bc9\u5e2b\u548c\u5229\u5b89\u9867\u554f\u6709\u9650\u516c\u53f8\uff08”\u5229\u5b89”\uff09\u7684\u8463\u4e8b\u7e3d\u7d93\u7406\uff0c\u5728\u6b64\u5206\u4eab\u5979\u7684\u898b\u89e3\u548c\u9ad4\u6703\uff1a\u5982\u4f55\u901a\u904e\u734e\u5b78\u91d1\u63d0\u4f9b\u7684\u652f\u6301\uff0c\u5728\u5b78\u7fd2\u671f\u9593\u5df2\u7acb\u4e0b\u76ee\u6a19\uff0c\u5b78\u696d\u6709\u6210\u5f8c\u7a4d\u6975\u56de\u994b\u793e\u6703\uff0c\u4e0d\u8ca0\u57fa\u91d1\u7684\u652f\u6301\uff1b\u4e26\u6fc0\u767c\u5979\u904b\u7528\u6240\u638c\u63e1\u7684\u6280\u80fd\u548c\u57f9\u80b2\u7684\u50f9\u503c\u89c0\u4f86\u70ba\u66f4\u5ee3\u6cdb\u7684\u793e\u6703\u9818\u57df\u4f5c\u51fa\u8ca2\u737b\u3002 \u5728\u5efa\u7bc9\u8a2d\u8a08\u548c\u5efa\u7bc9\u7ba1\u7406\u65b9\u9762\uff0c\u5979\u5021\u5c0e\u548c\u8e10\u884c\u53ef\u6301\u7e8c\u767c\u5c55\u53ca\u7da0\u8272\u4f4e\u78b3\uff0c\u4ee5\u53ca\u63a7\u5236\u548c\u6e1b\u5c11\u5168\u7403\u80fd\u6e90\u76f8\u95dc\u4e8c\u6c27\u5316\u78b3\u6392\u653e\u7e3d\u91cf\u7684\u5fc5\u8981\u6027\u3002\u540c\u6642\uff0c\u5979\u7a4d\u6975\u6295\u653e\u6642\u9593\uff0c\u767c\u63ee\u81ea\u5df1\u7684\u624d\u80fd\uff0c\u7fa9\u52d9\u70ba\u793e\u6703\u63d0\u4f9b\u76f8\u95dc\u6559\u80b2\u548c\u57f9\u8a13\uff0c\u4e26\u901a\u904e\u5229\u5b89\u5411\u5728\u6821\u5efa\u7bc9\u5b78\u79d1\u7684\u5b78\u751f\u63d0\u4f9b\u734e\u5b78\u91d1\u3002<\/p>\r\n
\u674e\u5c11\u7a4e\u5973\u58eb\u5f9e\u5c0f\u5c31\u900f\u904e\u5c0d\u5efa\u7bc9\u6a21\u578b\u7684\u8208\u8da3\u548c\u5c0d\u8996\u89ba\u85dd\u8853\u7684\u6b23\u8cde\uff0c\u8868\u73fe\u51fa\u654f\u92b3\u7684\u7a7a\u9593\u610f\u8b58\u3002\u5979\u4e00\u4f4d\u53d4\u53d4\uff0c\u662f\u4e00\u540d\u5efa\u7bc9\u5e2b\uff0c\u5bdf\u89ba\u5230\u5979\u6709\u5148\u5929\u7684\u8a2d\u8a08\u5929\u8ce6\u4e26\u5c0d\u8a2d\u8a08\u5145\u6eff\u71b1\u60c5\uff0c\u6210\u70ba\u5979\u6d1e\u5bdf\u5efa\u7bc9\u4e16\u754c\u7684\u7a97\u53e3\u3002\u5979\u5728\u4e2d\u5b78\u671f\u9593\u5c31\u6709\u5e78\u7372\u5f97\u6a5f\u6703\u53c3\u89c0\u5efa\u7bc9\u5de5\u5730\uff0c\u5f97\u4ee5\u4e00\u7779\u5efa\u7bc9\u8a2d\u8a08\u5982\u4f55\u8b8a\u6210\u73fe\u5be6\uff0c\u56e0\u800c\u6df1\u53d7\u555f\u767c\uff0c\u7acb\u5fd7\u6210\u70ba\u4e00\u540d\u5efa\u7bc9\u5e2b\u3002\u9ad8\u4e2d\u7562\u696d\u5f8c\uff0c\u5979\u5728\u9999\u6e2f\u4e2d\u6587\u5927\u5b78\u5efa\u7bc9\u5b78\u7cfb\u653b\u8b80\u5b78\u58eb\u5b78\u4f4d\u53ca\u78a9\u58eb\u5b78\u4f4d\uff0c\u671f\u9593\u5979\u63a5\u53d7\u4e86\u7cfb\u79d1\u4e3b\u4efb\u7684\u63a8\u85a6\uff0c\u5728\u7f8e\u570b\u897f\u96c5\u5716\u7684\u83ef\u76db\u9813\u5927\u5b78\u505a\u4e86\u4e00\u5e74\u4ea4\u63db\u751f\u3002\u78a9\u58eb\u7562\u696d\u6642\uff0c\u674e\u5973\u58eb\u88ab\u9078\u70ba\u7562\u696d\u5c55\u89bd\u7684\u7b56\u5c55\u8ca0\u8cac\u4eba\uff0c\u5c55\u89bd\u671f\u9593\uff0c\u5728\u8207\u5229\u5b89\u4e00\u4f4d\u57f7\u884c\u8463\u4e8b\u9032\u884c\u4e86\u7c21\u77ed\u4ea4\u6d41\u5f8c\uff0c\u5979\u88ab\u9080\u8acb\u52a0\u5165\u516c\u53f8\u3002<\/p>\r\n

\u5728\u674e\u5c11\u7a4e\u5973\u58eb\u53c3\u8207\u7684\u773e\u591a\u9805\u76ee\u4e2d\uff0c\u9999\u6e2f\u79d1\u5b78\u5712\u7684\u5169\u500b\u9805\u76ee\uff0c\u7121\u8ad6\u662f\u5f9e\u500b\u4eba\u89d2\u5ea6\u9084\u662f\u5de5\u4f5c\u89d2\u5ea6\uff0c\u5747\u4ee4\u5979\u5370\u8c61\u6700\u70ba\u6df1\u523b\uff1a-

\u53e6\u4e00\u500b\u96e3\u5fd8\u7684\u662f\u9999\u6e2f\u79d1\u5b78\u5712\u6700\u8fd1\u5b8c\u6210\u7684\u300c\u5275\u65b0\u6597\u5ba4\u300d(\u201cInnoCell\u201d)\u767c\u5c55\u9805\u76ee\u3002\u9019\u662f\u4e00\u500b\u5728\u9999\u6e2f\u5c07\u7d44\u88dd\u5408\u6210\u5efa\u7bc9\u6cd5(\u201cMiC\u201d)\u61c9\u7528\u65bc\u9ad8\u5c64\u5efa\u7bc9\u7684\u91cd\u8981\u8a66\u9ede\u9805\u76ee\u3002\u7d44\u88dd\u5408\u6210\u96d6\u7136\u4e0d\u662f\u65b0\u6280\u8853\uff0c\u66f4\u53ef\u4ee5\u63a8\u52d5\u9999\u6e2f\u5efa\u9020\u696d\u7684\u5275\u65b0\u53ca\u7de9\u89e3\u52de\u5de5\u77ed\u7f3a\u7684\u554f\u984c\uff0c\u4f46\u9452\u65bc\u9999\u6e2f\u7684\u4eba\u53e3\u5bc6\u96c6\u548c\u73fe\u884c\u5efa\u7bc9\u6cd5\u898f\uff0c\u7d44\u88dd\u5408\u6210\u5728\u6280\u8853\u548c\u6cd5\u5f8b\u5c64\u9762\u4e0a\u5747\u9762\u81e8\u5de8\u5927\u6311\u6230\u3002\u9019\u5c0d\u5efa\u7bc9\u884c\u696d\u4e2d\u7684\u76f8\u95dc\u6301\u4efd\u8005\uff0c\u5305\u62ec\u5efa\u7bc9\u5e2b\u3001\u5de5\u7a0b\u5e2b\u3001\u6e2c\u91cf\u5e2b\u548c\u627f\u5305\u5546\u7b49\u90fd\u662f\u4e00\u500b\u969c\u7919\u3002\u4f5c\u70ba\u9996\u5e2d\u5efa\u7bc9\u9867\u554f\uff0c\u674e\u5973\u58eb\u53c3\u8207\u4e86\u9019\u500b\u9805\u76ee\u7684\u5404\u500b\u74b0\u7bc0\uff0c\u5f9e\u6982\u5ff5\u8a2d\u8a08\u5230\u9810\u88fd\u65b9\u6cd5\uff0c\u518d\u5230\u7d44\u5408\u548c\u5b89\u88dd\u3002\u5979\u8a8d\u70ba\uff0c\u9019\u500b\u9805\u76ee\u70ba\u9999\u6e2f\u5efa\u7bc9\u696d\u5f15\u5165\u4e86\u65b0\u7684\u5efa\u7bc9\u65b9\u6cd5\uff0c\u4e26\u63d0\u4f9b\u4e86\u89e3\u6c7a\u4eba\u624b\u77ed\u7f3a\u7684\u65b9\u6848\u3002\u901a\u904e\u8a72\u9805\u76ee\u7684\u5be6\u8e10\uff0c\u5e36\u52d5\u4e86\u6574\u500b\u884c\u696d\u5408\u4f5c\uff0c\u63a8\u5ee3\u4e86\u5275\u65b0\u7684\u5efa\u7bc9\u65b9\u6cd5\uff0c\u70ba\u9999\u6e2f\u672a\u4f86\u7684\u667a\u6167\u578b\u53ca\u7da0\u8272\u74b0\u4fdd\u5efa\u8a2d\u6a39\u7acb\u4e86\u6a19\u6746\u3002<\/p>\r\n
