We all perhaps know of someone who has switched careers or industries over time. In an era when career changing is becoming normalized, Mrs. Chandni Rakesh\u2019s story stands out as a unique exception. Mrs. Rakesh, Principal of La Salle Primary School and recipient of the Sir Edward Youde Memorial Scholarship for Undergraduate Students in 1997\/98, has been pursuing a singular passion, without deviating even once since she graduated, of educating Hong Kong\u2019s children.<\/p>\r\n
Mrs. Rakesh was born into a family of teachers and they wanted her to be one, too. However, she wanted to explore her own personal interests and passions. Rather, teaching is something she gradually grew into, with her university years and first job being the sparks that set it off.<\/p>\r\n
Early in her youth, Mrs. Rakesh had a strong interest in English. After entering university, she decided to select a major that would tap into her strength and passion. To develop skills for the application of English in different sectors, she pursued an undergraduate degree in English for Professional Communication at City University of Hong Kong. After her graduation, she was curious about the teaching profession. Her first-ever experience made her fall in love with teaching. One to two years later, after finishing a Post-Graduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) from the University of Hong Kong, she pursued a Masters in English Studies from the same university.<\/p>\r\n
Mrs. Rakesh’s first job as a registered teacher was in a private primary school. She worked there for five years. Apart from teaching, she also had some administrative roles and duties. Her second job was in a DSS primary school, where she worked for 12 years, first as a Senior Teacher and then as the Deputy Headteacher. Her third and current job, is in an all-boys school (La Salle Primary School). It has been her sixth year there as its Principal.<\/p>\r\n
As the Principal of a storied, esteemed institution, Mrs. Chandni Rakesh has spared no effort to ensure only the best for the students and staff of La Salle Primary School. She prioritized allocating more resources and attention to bridging Information technology (IT) and education, in order to enrich the school\u2019s STREAM (Science, Technology, Reading, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) curriculum. STREAM education focuses on helping students becoming ready for the \u2018digital age\u2019 of the 21st Century by awakening their interests and curiosities, primarily through teaching substantive and technical content. Mrs. Rakesh also devotes equal resources and attention to promote traditions that impart cherished values, such as showing love and care to everyone, thereby nurturing the students to become \u2018Lasallian Gentleman\u2019. Indeed, as an aided all-boys school, the students of La Salle Primary School come from diverse backgrounds, each with their own unique learning needs. It is imperative that all students \u2013 regardless of their differences \u2013 are educated to the same level of rigour. The school strives to identify the learning needs of every student and provide matching resources so that they all can equally take advantage of opportunities for attaining academic achievements. To achieve the whole-person development of students, Mrs. Rakesh makes it a point to involve not only teachers, but also the school managers, old boys and parents. It takes an inclusive community to raise a child, and all parties are integral elements of that community.<\/p>\r\n
Mrs. Rakesh received her Sir Edward Youde Memorial Scholarship for Undergraduate Students during her second year. She is proud to be recognized by a prestigious scholarship granting organization, like the Sir Edward Youde Memorial Council, and feels that the award encouraged her to pursue her strengths and give back to the city. Since graduation, she has devoted herself to a life of service as an educator, contributing back to the city where she was born and received all of her education. Near the end of the interview, Mrs. Rakesh shared with us her current goal: \u201cTo ensure La Salle Primary School is the best primary school in Hong Kong by touching the minds and hearts of our students and providing the highest quality of education.\u201d<\/p>\r\n
\u6216\u8a31\u5728\u6211\u5011\u8eab\u908a\uff0c\u7e3d\u6703\u6709\u4e9b\u4eba\u7d93\u5e38\u8f49\u63db\u81ea\u5df1\u7684\u8077\u696d\u6216\u662f\u6240\u5728\u7684\u884c\u696d\u3002\u5728\u9019\u500b\u8f49\u63db\u8077\u696d\u8b8a\u5f97\u5e38\u614b\u5316\u7684\u6642\u4ee3\uff0c\u5c24\u5fb7\u7235\u58eb\u7d00\u5ff5\u57fa\u91d1\u672c\u79d1\u751f\u734e\u5b78\u91d1\uff081997\/98\u5e74\u5ea6\uff09\u5f97\u734e\u8005\uff0c\u5587\u6c99\u5c0f\u5b78\u6821\u9577\u9ece\u6708\u5152\u5973\u58eb\uff0c\u537b\u662f\u4e00\u500b\u4f8b\u5916\u3002\u5979\u5f9e\u7562\u5230\u73fe\u5728\uff0c\u4e00\u76f4\u4ee5\u57f9\u80b2\u9999\u6e2f\u7684\u5b78\u751f\u70ba\u5df1\u4efb\uff0c\u5c0d\u6559\u80b2\u5145\u6eff\u71b1\u8aa0\u3002<\/p>\r\n
\u9ece\u5973\u58eb\u751f\u65bc\u4e00\u500b\u6559\u5e2b\u7684\u5bb6\u5ead\uff0c\u7236\u6bcd\u4e00\u76f4\u5e0c\u671b\u5979\u6210\u70ba\u4e00\u540d\u6559\u5e2b\u3002\u8d77\u521d\u5979\u539f\u60f3\u63a2\u7d22\u500b\u4eba\u8208\u8da3\uff0c\u5c0b\u627e\u81ea\u5df1\u7684\u767c\u5c55\u8def\u5411\uff0c\u7136\u800c\u5979\u7684\u5927\u5b78\u751f\u6d3b\u548c\u7b2c\u4e00\u4efd\u5de5\u4f5c\u537b\u9ede\u71c3\u4e86\u5979\u9019\u4efd\u5c0d\u6559\u80b2\u7684\u71b1\u8aa0\u3002<\/p>\r\n
