Youders\u2019 Story – Mr. Victor Yuen

It is inevitable for us to encounter different kinds of failures in our lives. Some will give up in the face of these difficulties, but some will continue to soar high. The recipient of the Sir Edward Youde Memorial Scholarship for Disabled Students 2010\/11, Mr. Yuen lost his eyesight when he was seven due to some inborn reasons. However, he strived hard and eventually, he became the first visually impaired barrister in Hong Kong.<\/p>\r\n
Mr. Yuen was diagnosed as having congenital glaucoma immediately after his birth, hence his eyesight was worse than normal and it would keep worsening. Mr. Yuen had had many hospital medical checkups during his young age; he underwent surgeries and tried other methods with the hope to delay the deterioration of his eyesight. Eventually, Mr. Yuen lost his eyesight when he was seven. His parents arranged for Mr. Yuen to attend the Ebenezer School & Home for the Visually Impaired when Mr. Yuen was five, so Mr. Yuen had received training on reading the braille and other life skills before he lost his eyesight two years later. He recalled that the school would train the students\u2019 fingers\u2019 sensitivity so that they could read the braille to receive various information after they became blind, and one of the training was that they had to use a long thin thread to pass through the tiny holes of sequins.<\/p>\r\n
Since the Ebenezer School & Home for the Visually Impaired only offers courses up to secondary three level, Mr. Yuen applied for and was admitted to Wah Yan College, Hong Kong for further education. At the outset, he could not adapt to the new learning environment, and the use of English as the medium of instruction, hence he did not achieve satisfactory academic results. Mr. Yuen understood that the school expected the same from him as from other students, hence Mr. Yuen had to spend more time on revision. Soon, Mr. Yuen picked up the pace and he chose the Arts stream in his senior secondary school study. Finally, he achieved satisfactory results in the Hong Kong Advanced Level Examination (HKALE) and was admitted to the Bachelor of Arts of the University of Hong Kong.<\/p>\r\n
During his senior secondary school study, Mr. Yuen had already contemplated his future after he graduated. He wished to find a job that could support his living, but most of the visually impaired people could hardly find a job that could enable them to take care of themselves and reward them with job satisfaction. After due consideration, he reckoned that the most viable option was to become a professional, amongst which becoming a lawyer was his only choice. Since Mr. Yuen\u2019s public exam results were insufficient to meet the admission criteria of the Bachelor of Laws, he chose to study translation at the Faculty of Arts. Upon graduation, he realized that certain institutions had started to offer the Juris Doctor programme where he could receive general education in law and a postgraduate law degree. He was admitted to the Chinese University of Hong Kong after a series of interviews.<\/p>\r\n
After receiving the two-year intensive legal training and passing the Postgraduate Certificate in Laws (PCLL) programme, Mr. Yuen realized his dream of being admitted to the legal profession. Facing the choice between becoming a solicitor and a barrister, he chose the latter because he reckoned that his social skills were not his strong suit. He was very grateful that he had met four outstanding barristers during his pupillage, who were so kind that they were willing to understand Mr. Yuen\u2019s needs and make adjustments accordingly so that Mr. Yuen could learn more during his pupillage. Two of his masters are currently working in the same chambers as Mr. Yuen, and Mr. Yuen has received many referrals from these two masters. At the beginning of his career, since Mr. Yuen had no personal connections at all, plus the fact that lay clients might doubt his capability, he had to collaborate with his masters; his masters would liaise with the clients, and Mr. Yuen would conduct research and draft documents. Soon, some solicitors acknowledged Mr. Yuen\u2019s capability and were willing to refer cases to him. Now, Mr. Yuen\u2019s efforts have paid off and he has successfully built up both his network and reputation.<\/p>\r\n
Currently, most of his work focuses on civil matters, because unexpected issues often arise in criminal cases and Mr. Yuen acknowledges that his physical conditions may limit his ability to deal with these issues. On the contrary, civil matters involve mostly paperwork and he may do sufficient preparation beforehand. Although Mr. Yuen has built up his reputation, half of his work is still referred to him by his masters and colleagues. Therefore, he hopes that he may receive more work in his capacity in the future. Besides, he has been learning different kinds of martial arts since secondary school, especially Wing Chun, but he ceased learning it ever since the pandemic. Thus, he hopes that he may pick up Wing Chun and other martial arts again.<\/p>\r\n
Mr. Yuen received the Sir Edward Youde Memorial Scholarship for Disabled Students when he was studying at the University of Hong Kong. He reckoned that the Scholarship served as a recognition for the hard work and efforts of disabled students. Mr. Yuen has utilized the scholarship to purchase a voice software which has certainly assisted his study. Undoubtedly, becoming blind is a nightmare. However, Mr. Yuen has repeatedly mentioned how grateful he is for his life. For example, compared with other visually impaired persons, Mr. Yuen found himself a lucky person since he had had seven years to appreciate this beautiful world with his own eyes before he became blind and understand the meaning of \u2018colour\u2019 which is a very abstract concept for other visually impaired persons. Besides, he is so pleased that he has encountered a lot of loving and caring persons in his life, including the teachers at the Ebenezer School & Home for the Visually Impaired and Wah Yan College, Hong Kong, who exhausted all means to satisfy his academic needs; the teaching staff at the universities and his pupil masters who provided him with many precious suggestions in his career; and his parents who have unconditionally taken care of everything in his life and have been very supportive of every single decision he made. Finally, Mr. Yuen encouraged other disabled persons to rise to the challenges, and never let their physical disability impedes their ability to live a full life.<\/p>\r\n
\u4eba\u751f\u8def\u4e0a\u7e3d\u6703\u9047\u4e0a\u5927\u5927\u5c0f\u5c0f\u7684\u632b\u6298\uff0c\u6709\u4eba\u5728\u9762\u5c0d\u632b\u6557\u6642\u6703\u8b8a\u5f97\u4e00\u8e76\u4e0d\u632f\uff0c\u4f46\u4ea6\u6709\u4eba\u5728\u7d93\u6b77\u4f4e\u6f6e\u5f8c\u4ecd\u80fd\u81ea\u5f37\u4e0d\u606f\u3002\u5c24\u5fb7\u7235\u58eb\u7d00\u5ff5\u57fa\u91d1\u6b98\u75be\u5b78\u751f\u734e\u5b78\u91d12010\/11\u5e74\u5f97\u734e\u8005\uff0c\u8881\u777f\u6f84\u5927\u5f8b\u5e2b\u56e0\u5148\u5929\u539f\u56e0\u57287\u6b72\u6642\u6c38\u4e45\u5931\u53bb\u8996\u529b\uff0c\u7d93\u904e\u591a\u5e74\u7684\u52aa\u529b\u4e0d\u61c8\u6700\u7d42\u6210\u70ba\u9999\u6e2f\u9996\u4f4d\u8996\u969c\u5927\u5f8b\u5e2b\u3002<\/p>\r\n
\u8881\u5927\u5f8b\u5e2b\u5728\u525b\u51fa\u751f\u5c31\u78ba\u8a3a\u60a3\u6709\u5148\u5929\u6027\u9752\u5149\u773c\uff0c\u8996\u529b\u6bd4\u6b63\u5e38\u4eba\u5dee\uff0c\u66f4\u6703\u4e0d\u65b7\u9000\u5316\u3002\u5c0f\u6642\u5019\u4ed6\u5df2\u7d93\u7d93\u5e38\u51fa\u5165\u91ab\u9662\u8986\u8a3a\uff0c\u5e0c\u671b\u900f\u904e\u624b\u8853\u6216\u5176\u4ed6\u65b9\u6cd5\u6e1b\u6162\u8996\u529b\u7684\u9000\u5316\u3002\u6700\u5f8c\uff0c\u4ed6\u57287\u6b72\u6642\u6c38\u4e45\u5931\u53bb\u8996\u529b\u3002\u65e9\u5728\u5169\u5e74\u524d\u4ed6\u7684\u7236\u6bcd\u5df2\u5b89\u6392\u4ed6\u5165\u8b80\u5fc3\u5149\u76f2\u4eba\u5b78\u6821\uff0c\u8b93\u4ed6\u5728\u5c1a\u672a\u5931\u660e\u4e4b\u6642\u5b78\u6703\u4e86\u9ede\u5b57\u53ca\u5176\u4ed6\u751f\u6d3b\u6280\u80fd\u3002\u4ed6\u61b6\u8ff0\uff0c\u7576\u5e74\u70ba\u4e86\u8a13\u7df4\u4ed6\u5011\u7684\u624b\u6307\u9748\u654f\u5ea6\u4ee5\u95b1\u8b80\u9ede\u5b57\uff0c\u5b78\u6821\u5b89\u6392\u4ed6\u5011\u9032\u884c\u4e32\u73e0\u8a13\u7df4\uff0c\u4f7f\u4ed6\u5728\u5931\u660e\u5f8c\u4ecd\u80fd\u900f\u904e\u9ede\u5b57\u7372\u5f97\u8cc7\u8a0a\u3002<\/p>\r\n
\u7531\u65bc\u5fc3\u5149\u76f2\u4eba\u5b78\u6821\u7684\u8ab2\u7a0b\u53ea\u63d0\u4f9b\u521d\u4e2d\u7684\u8ab2\u7a0b\uff0c\u8881\u5927\u5f8b\u5e2b\u5728\u5b8c\u6210\u4e2d\u4e8c\u5f8c\u5c31\u5230\u9999\u6e2f\u83ef\u4ec1\u66f8\u9662\u5347\u8b80\u4e2d\u4e09\u3002\u8d77\u521d\uff0c\u7531\u65bc\u7121\u6cd5\u9069\u61c9\u6821\u5712\u74b0\u5883\u548c\u6559\u5b78\u8a9e\u8a00\u4ee5\u81f3\u5b78\u79d1\u7684\u5206\u985e\uff0c\u4ed6\u7684\u6210\u7e3e\u672a\u5982\u7406\u60f3\u3002\u5728\u5982\u6b64\u60c5\u6cc1\u4e0b\uff0c\u8881\u5927\u5f8b\u5e2b\u660e\u767d\u5230\u4e3b\u6d41\u5b78\u6821\u7684\u6559\u80b2\u4e0d\u6703\u56e0\u70ba\u81ea\u5df1\u7684\u6b98\u969c\u800c\u9077\u5c31\u81ea\u5df1\uff0c\u552f\u6709\u786c\u8457\u982d\u76ae\u591a\u82b1\u6642\u9593\u6eab\u66f8\u548c\u7df4\u7fd2\u3002\u7d93\u904e\u4e00\u6bb5\u6642\u9593\u7684\u9069\u61c9\uff0c\u4ed6\u5728\u9ad8\u4e2d\u9078\u8b80\u4e86\u6587\u79d1\uff0c\u6700\u7d42\u5728\u9ad8\u7d1a\u7a0b\u5ea6\u6703\u8003\u4ee5\u4e0d\u4fd7\u7684\u6210\u7e3e\u5165\u8b80\u9999\u6e2f\u5927\u5b78\u7684\u6587\u5b78\u58eb\u5b78\u4f4d\u3002<\/p>\r\n
\u9ad8\u4e2d\u6642\uff0c\u8881\u5927\u5f8b\u5e2b\u5df2\u7d93\u5728\u601d\u8003\u7562\u696d\u5f8c\u7684\u53bb\u8def\u3002\u4ed6\u5e0c\u671b\u4ed6\u7684\u5de5\u4f5c\u80fd\u5920\u990a\u6d3b\u81ea\u5df1\uff0c\u4f46\u5927\u90e8\u5206\u5931\u660e\u4eba\u58eb\u90fd\u96e3\u4ee5\u627e\u5230\u4e00\u4efd\u8b93\u4ed6\u5011\u7167\u9867\u81ea\u5df1\u7684\u540c\u6642\u3001\u53c8\u80fd\u63d0\u4f9b\u5de5\u4f5c\u6210\u5c31\u611f\u7684\u5de5\u4f5c\u3002\u601d\u524d\u60f3\u5f8c\uff0c\u4ed6\u8a8d\u70ba\u6700\u53ef\u884c\u7684\u65b9\u6cd5\u662f\u6210\u70ba\u4e00\u540d\u5c08\u696d\u4eba\u58eb\uff0c\u800c\u5f8b\u5e2b\u662f\u552f\u4e00\u7684\u9078\u9805\u3002\u8d77\u521d\uff0c\u4ed6\u7684\u516c\u958b\u8a66\u6210\u7e3e\u672a\u8db3\u4ee5\u8b93\u4ed6\u5165\u8b80\u6cd5\u5b78\u58eb\u5b78\u4f4d\uff0c\u4ed6\u6c7a\u5b9a\u9078\u64c7\u4fee\u8b80\u6587\u5b78\u9662\u7684\u7ffb\u8b6f\u3002\u7562\u696d\u5f8c\uff0c\u4ed6\u767c\u73fe\u9999\u6e2f\u7684\u9662\u6821\u525b\u958b\u8fa6\u4e86\u6cd5\u5f8b\u535a\u58eb (Juris Doctor)\uff0c\u8b93\u4ed6\u80fd\u5920\u4ee5\u7814\u7a76\u751f\u8eab\u4efd\u4fee\u8b80\u6cd5\u5f8b\uff0c\u7d93\u904e\u4e00\u8f2a\u9762\u8a66\u5f8c\u4ed6\u7372\u5f97\u4e2d\u6587\u5927\u5b78\u9304\u53d6\u3002<\/p>\r\n
\u5169\u5e74\u7684\u82e6\u8b80\uff0c\u52a0\u4e0a\u9806\u5229\u901a\u904e\u6cd5\u5b78\u5c08\u696d\u8b49\u66f8\u7684\u8003\u8a66\uff0c\u8881\u5927\u5f8b\u5e2b\u7d42\u65bc\u5f97\u511f\u6240\u9858\u7372\u5f97\u6cd5\u5f8b\u57f7\u696d\u7684\u8cc7\u683c\u3002\u4ed6\u81ea\u554f\u4ea4\u969b\u80fd\u529b\u4e26\u975e\u5176\u5f37\u9805\uff0c\u81ea\u5df1\u6216\u8a31\u672a\u80fd\u52dd\u4efb\u4e8b\u52d9\u5f8b\u5e2b\uff0c\u6240\u4ee5\u4ed6\u9078\u64c7\u6210\u70ba\u4e00\u540d\u5927\u5f8b\u5e2b\u3002\u4e00\u8def\u8d70\u4f86\uff0c\u6700\u4ee4\u4ed6\u96e3\u5fd8\u7684\u662f\u5728\u5be6\u7fd2\u6642\u9047\u4e0a\u7684\u56db\u4f4d\u5e2b\u7236\u3002\u4ed6\u5011\u9664\u4e86\u662f\u5091\u51fa\u7684\u5f8b\u5e2b\u5916\uff0c\u5728\u8881\u5927\u5f8b\u5e2b\u5be6\u7fd2\u6642\u4ea6\u5341\u5206\u9858\u610f\u4e86\u89e3\u4ed6\u7684\u9700\u8981\u800c\u8abf\u6574\u9032\u5ea6\uff0c\u4f7f\u4ed6\u80fd\u638c\u63e1\u5230\u66f4\u591a\u7684\u77e5\u8b58\u3002\u53e6\u5916\uff0c\u4ed6\u7684\u5176\u4e2d\u5169\u4f4d\u5e2b\u7236\u73fe\u6b63\u8ddf\u4ed6\u5728\u540c\u4e00\u500b\u5927\u5f8b\u5e2b\u8fa6\u4e8b\u8655\uff0c\u8d77\u521d\u4ed6\u7684\u751f\u610f\u4f86\u6e90\u90fd\u662f\u5169\u4f4d\u5e2b\u7236\u4ecb\u7d39\u7684\u3002\u7576\u6642\uff0c\u7531\u65bc\u81ea\u5df1\u6c92\u6709\u4efb\u4f55\u4eba\u8108\uff0c\u52a0\u4e0a\u5ba2\u6236\u53ef\u80fd\u5c0d\u8881\u5927\u5f8b\u5e2b\u7684\u5de5\u4f5c\u80fd\u529b\u5b58\u6709\u61f7\u7591\uff0c\u6240\u4ee5\u4ed6\u6709\u9700\u8981\u8ddf\u4ed6\u7684\u5e2b\u7236\u5408\u4f5c\uff0c\u7531\u5e2b\u7236\u63a5\u6d3d\u5ba2\u6236\uff0c\u800c\u4ed6\u5247\u5728\u80cc\u5f8c\u9032\u884c\u7814\u7a76\u53ca\u6587\u4ef6\u8d77\u8349\u7b49\u5de5\u4f5c\u3002\u6162\u6162\u5730\uff0c\u4e00\u4e9b\u4e8b\u52d9\u5f8b\u5e2b\u8a8d\u540c\u4e86\u4ed6\u7684\u80fd\u529b\uff0c\u958b\u59cb\u8f49\u4ecb\u4e86\u4e00\u4e9b\u6848\u4ef6\u7d66\u4ed6\uff0c\u6191\u8457\u81ea\u5df1\u7684\u52aa\u529b\u4e00\u9ede\u4e00\u6ef4\u7684\u7d2f\u7a4d\u8d77\u81ea\u5df1\u7684\u4eba\u8108\u548c\u8072\u8b7d\u3002<\/p>\r\n
\u73fe\u6642\uff0c\u4ed6\u7684\u5927\u90e8\u5206\u7684\u5de5\u4f5c\u90fd\u662f\u6c11\u4e8b\u6848\u4ef6\uff0c\u56e0\u70ba\u5211\u4e8b\u6848\u4ef6\u6709\u5f88\u591a\u7a81\u767c\u7684\u60c5\u6cc1\u767c\u751f\uff0c\u800c\u4ed6\u7684\u8eab\u9ad4\u689d\u4ef6\u96e3\u4ee5\u61c9\u5c0d\uff1b\u76f8\u5c0d\u4e0a\uff0c\u6c11\u4e8b\u6848\u4ef6\u8f03\u591a\u662f\u6587\u4ef6\u4e0a\u7684\u8cc7\u6599\uff0c\u53ef\u4ee5\u9810\u5148\u6e96\u5099\u3002\u53e6\u5916\uff0c\u5373\u4f7f\u4ed6\u5df2\u5efa\u7acb\u4e86\u4e00\u5b9a\u7684\u540d\u8072\uff0c\u4f46\u4ed6\u4ecd\u6709\u4e00\u534a\u7684\u5de5\u4f5c\u7531\u4ed6\u7684\u5e2b\u7236\u6216\u540c\u4e8b\u8f49\u4ecb\u800c\u4f86\uff0c\u4ed6\u5e0c\u671b\u5c07\u4f86\u80fd\u589e\u52a0\u81ea\u5df1\u7684\u6848\u4ef6\u3002\u5de5\u4f5c\u4ee5\u5916\uff0c\u4ed6\u5728\u4e2d\u5b78\u4ee5\u4f86\u90fd\u6709\u5b78\u7fd2\u4e0d\u540c\u7684\u6b66\u8853\uff0c\u7279\u5225\u662f\u8a60\u6625\u3002\u4ed6\u5e0c\u671b\u5728\u77ed\u671f\u5167\u91cd\u6295\u7df4\u7fd2\uff0c\u5728\u8a60\u6625\u548c\u5176\u4ed6\u6b66\u8853\u4e0a\u7e7c\u7e8c\u6df1\u9020\u3002<\/p>\r\n
