\u201cHave the courage to face your obstacles and work through it.\u201d I never forget my mother telling me that when I lost 90 per cent of my hearing in primary four. I often stared at my teachers with a blank expression, and my academic performance suffered. I decided to quit the mainstream education. She said, \u201cYou are running away. You don\u2019t have the courage to confront your problems and improve it. You will never accomplish anything because you will flee from the next challenge again.\u201d<\/p>\n

That really ticked me off. I stayed. Following her advice, I put extra effort into my study, and worked hard to acquire the skill of lip-reading. It worked. My grades went back up, and I never worry about what others say about my impairment.<\/p>\n

Fast forward ten years. I was admitted to the English department at the Hong Kong Baptist University, where I studied comparative literature and translation. In 2010, I was awarded the HSBC Overseas Scholarship to spend a year studying sociology, social politics and literature at the London School of Economics. Thereafter, I returned to Hong Kong to complete my undergraduate studies, and graduated with the highest cumulative GPA in the comparative literature programme.<\/p>\n

In 2012, I was awarded the Sir Edward Youde Memorial Overseas Fellowship for Disabled Students to pursue a Master of Arts at the School of Oriental and African Studies (University of London), which I completed with distinction. It was the time when I cultivated my interests in law and literature \u2013 how society is shaped through legal rules and regulations, how behaviour, norms and values are reflected in literary works, which in turn provoke social changes.<\/p>\n

2012\u5e74\uff0c\u6211\u7372\u9812\u5c24\u5fb7\u7235\u58eb\u7d00\u5ff5\u57fa\u91d1\u6b98\u75be\u5b78\u751f\u6d77\u5916\u7814\u7a76\u751f\u734e\u5b78\u91d1\uff0c\u8d74\u502b\u6566\u5927\u5b78\u4e9e\u975e\u5b78\u9662\u653b\u8b80\u6587\u5b78\u78a9\u58eb\uff0c\u4e26\u4ee5\u512a\u7570\u6210\u7e3e\u5b8c\u6210\u5b78\u696d\u3002\u6b63\u662f\u5728\u90a3\u6bb5\u671f\u9593\uff0c\u6211\u57f9\u990a\u51fa\u5c0d\u6cd5\u5f8b\u8207\u6587\u5b78\u4ea4\u53c9\u9818\u57df\u7684\u8208\u8da3\u2500\u2500\u601d\u8003\u6cd5\u5f8b\u898f\u7bc4\u5982\u4f55\u5851\u9020\u793e\u6703\u3001\u884c\u70ba\u8207\u898f\u7bc4\u53ca\u50f9\u503c\u89c0\u5982\u4f55\u5728\u6587\u5b78\u4f5c\u54c1\u4e2d\u53cd\u6620\uff0c\u9032\u800c\u4fc3\u6210\u793e\u6703\u8b8a\u9769\u3002<\/p>\n

My initial plan was to study PhD in comparative literature (with a law and literature focus) in the United Kingdom. But I did not have a solid training and understanding of the law. I decided to come home to enroll in the Juris Doctor programme in 2013, followed by the Postgraduate Certificate in Laws (PCLL) in 2015, both at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. It was during this period I met my mentor, a seasoned lawyer with strong ethical principles and integrity, who changed the trajectory of my career. He introduced me to the practice of law beyond book knowledge, how to navigate ethical and moral dilemmas, and how to make personally challenging yet professionally mandated decisions. I began my career under his supervision, from trainee solicitor in 2016 to associate in 2019, and senior associate in 2022 till the present day.<\/p>\n

Time and time again, I was entrusted with new assignments, and self-doubt plagued me. The reassuring words of my mother would resonate in my mind. My supervisor, mentors and friends would refer me to resources such as courses, workshops and networking events, helping me to keep abreast of changes and expand my skill sets. Their support has motivated me to embrace lifelong learning and new opportunities, and driven me through tough moments.<\/p>\n

\u5c62\u6b21\u88ab\u59d4\u4ee5\u65b0\u4efb\u52d9\u6642\uff0c\u81ea\u6211\u61f7\u7591\u5e38\u5728\u5fc3\u982d\u76e4\u65cb\uff0c\u6bcd\u89aa\u90a3\u53e5\u9f13\u52f5\u7684\u8a71\u4ecd\u5728\u8033\u7554\u56de\u97ff\u3002\u6211\u7684\u4e0a\u53f8\u3001\u5c0e\u5e2b\u8207\u670b\u53cb\u6703\u5411\u6211\u63a8\u85a6\u8ab2\u7a0b\u3001\u5de5\u4f5c\u574a\u8207\u793e\u4ea4\u6d3b\u52d5\u7b49\u8cc7\u6e90\uff0c\u5354\u52a9\u6211\u638c\u63e1\u6700\u65b0\u8b8a\u5316\u4e26\u64f4\u5c55\u6280\u80fd\u3002\u6b63\u662f\u4ed6\u5011\u7684\u652f\u6301\uff0c\u6fc0\u52f5\u6211\u64c1\u62b1\u7d42\u8eab\u5b78\u7fd2\u8207\u65b0\u6a5f\u6703\uff0c\u4e26\u5728\u8271\u96e3\u6642\u523b\u652f\u6301\u6211\u8d70\u904e\u3002<\/p>\n

The Fellowship has not only provided financial support for further studies, opened door to new realm beyond my comfort zone, but also changed perspectives about my potential. Through Youders\u2019 stories, the Association has proven that any one of us \u2013 be it women, the disabled or marginalized \u2013 where given support and platforms to bring our talents into full play, can make real changes to not only our careers, but also our lives and the society at large.<\/p>\n

\u9019\u9805\u734e\u5b78\u91d1\u4e0d\u50c5\u63d0\u4f9b\u6211\u9032\u4e00\u6b65\u6df1\u9020\u7684\u7d93\u6fdf\u652f\u63f4\u3001\u6253\u958b\u8d70\u51fa\u8212\u9069\u5708\u7684\u5927\u9580\uff0c\u4e5f\u6539\u8b8a\u4e86\u6211\u5c0d\u81ea\u8eab\u6f5b\u80fd\u7684\u770b\u6cd5\u3002\u900f\u904e\u5c24\u5fb7\u734e\u5b78\u91d1\u53d7\u52a9\u8005\u7684\u6545\u4e8b\uff0c\u8a72\u5354\u6703\u8b49\u660e\uff1a\u4efb\u4f55\u4eba\u5728\u7372\u5f97\u652f\u6301\u8207\u5e73\u53f0\u5f8c\u2500\u2500\u7121\u8ad6\u662f\u5973\u6027\u3001\u8eab\u5fc3\u969c\u7919\u8005\u6216\u5176\u4ed6\u88ab\u908a\u7de3\u5316\u7684\u7fa4\u9ad4\u2500\u2500\u90fd\u80fd\u5145\u5206\u767c\u63ee\u624d\u83ef\uff0c\u4e0d\u50c5\u6539\u8b8a\u500b\u4eba\u7684\u8077\u6daf\uff0c\u4e5f\u80fd\u6539\u8b8a\u751f\u547d\u53ca\u6574\u9ad4\u793e\u6703\u3002<\/p>\n
