\u201cAim high and dare to fail!\u201d When I first picked up a coral skeleton on the beach as a child, I never imagined it would shape my career and lifelong mission\u2014to advance coral science while restoring and protecting the fragile marine ecosystems of my home. Habitat restoration is an important theme of the Hong Kong Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan 2035, and I am deeply committed not only to reviving these precious coral ecosystems but also to inspiring the next generation of environmental stewards. Today, I lead groundbreaking work in coral breeding, ecosystem restoration, the resilience of Hong Kong coral communities to global change, and education outreach. My dedication has earned me the nickname \u201cCoral Mum,\u201d a testament to the impact I have made in this field.<\/p>\n

My connection with corals began in childhood. Growing up in Hong Kong, weekends often meant trips to the beach with my family. I vividly remember picking up a beautiful white rock covered with star-shaped patterns, only to discover years later that it was a coral skeleton. That moment stayed with me, and during my postgraduate studies, I chose to dedicate myself to coral biology. I obtained my M.Phil. and Ph.D. in Environmental Science and Biology, focusing on coral recruitment, spawning pattern, and resilience in Hong Kong\u2019s marginal marine environment.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u6211\u8207\u73ca\u745a\u7684\u7de3\u5206\u59cb\u65bc\u7ae5\u5e74\u3002\u6210\u9577\u65bc\u9999\u6e2f\u7684\u6211\uff0c\u9031\u672b\u5e38\u5e38\u8207\u5bb6\u4eba\u5230\u6d77\u7058\u904a\u73a9\u3002\u6211\u8a18\u5f97\u6709\u4e00\u6b21\u64bf\u5230\u4e00\u584a\u767d\u8272\u7684\u77f3\u982d\uff0c\u4e0a\u9762\u5e03\u6eff\u661f\u5f62\u7684\u82b1\u7d0b\uff0c\u76f4\u5230\u7814\u7a76\u751f\u6642\u671f\u624d\u77e5\u9053\u90a3\u662f\u4e00\u584a\u73ca\u745a\u9aa8\u9abc\u3002\u9019\u6bb5\u7d93\u6b77\u6df1\u6df1\u89f8\u52d5\u4e86\u6211\uff0c\u8b93\u6211\u5728\u653b\u8b80\u54f2\u5b78\u78a9\u58eb\u53ca\u535a\u58eb\u6642\uff0c\u9078\u64c7\u5c08\u6ce8\u65bc\u73ca\u745a\u751f\u7269\u5b78\uff0c\u7814\u7a76\u9999\u6e2f\u6c34\u57df\u7684\u73ca\u745a\u88dc\u5145\u91cf\u3001\u7e41\u6b96\u6a21\u5f0f\uff0c\u4ee5\u53ca\u5728\u908a\u7de3\u74b0\u5883\u4e0b\u7684\u9069\u61c9\u529b\u3002<\/span><\/p>\n

I am now an assistant professor at the School of Life Sciences at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, as well as a PEW Marine Fellow, National Geographic Explorer, and advisory board member of the Coral Restoration Consortium. In Hong Kong, people affectionately call me the \u201cCoral Mum\u201d because every year my team and I breed corals for both research and restoration purposes. In our lab, we focus on sexual breeding techniques, which produe genetically diverse juveniles to build more resilient future populations. This involves collecting gametes during the brief spawning season, fertilizing them, and nurturing the larvae into baby corals. These coral juveniles grow in our nursery for one to two years before being outplanted into restoration sites. In 2019, we successfully outplanted two-year-old juveniles in Tolo Harbour, where nearly 90% survived. Three years later, they matured and spawned in the wild\u2014the first time lab-grown corals have completed their life cycle in Hong Kong waters at a restoration site. This milestone proved that restoration is possible, and now our challenge is to scale up.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u6211\u73fe\u5728\u662f\u9999\u6e2f\u4e2d\u6587\u5927\u5b78\u751f\u547d\u79d1\u5b78\u5b78\u9662\u7684\u52a9\u7406\u6559\u6388\uff0c\u540c\u6642\u4e5f\u662f PEW \u6d77\u6d0b\u7814\u7a76\u54e1\u3001\u570b\u5bb6\u5730\u7406\u63a2\u96aa\u5bb6\uff0c\u4ee5\u53ca\u73ca\u745a\u4fee\u5fa9\u806f\u76df\u7684\u9867\u554f\u59d4\u54e1\u3002\u5728\u9999\u6e2f\uff0c\u5927\u5bb6\u89aa\u5207\u5730\u7a31\u6211\u70ba\u300c\u73ca\u745a\u5abd\u5abd\u300d\uff0c\u56e0\u70ba\u6211\u548c\u5718\u968a\u6bcf\u5e74\u90fd\u6703\u7e41\u6b96\u53ca\u57f9\u80b2\u73ca\u745a\uff0c\u7528\u65bc\u7814\u7a76\u8207\u4fee\u5fa9\u3002\u5728\u6211\u5011\u7684\u5be6\u9a57\u5ba4\u88e1\uff0c\u6211\u5011\u5c08\u6ce8\u65bc\u6709\u6027\u7e41\u6b96\u6280\u8853\uff0c\u57f9\u80b2\u57fa\u56e0\u591a\u6a23\u5316\u7684\u5e7c\u9ad4\uff0c\u4ee5\u5efa\u7acb\u66f4\u5177\u97cc\u6027\u7684\u672a\u4f86\u73ca\u745a\u65cf\u7fa4\u3002\u9019\u9805\u5de5\u4f5c\u5305\u62ec\u5728\u77ed\u66ab\u7684\u7522\u5375\u5b63\u7bc0\u6536\u96c6\u73ca\u745a\u7684\u5375\u5b50\u8207\u7cbe\u5b50\uff0c\u9032\u884c\u53d7\u7cbe\u4e26\u57f9\u990a\u6210\u5e7c\u87f2\uff0c\u518d\u8b93\u7260\u5011\u6210\u9577\u70ba\u73ca\u745a\u5e7c\u82d7\u3002\u9019\u4e9b\u73ca\u745a\u82d7\u6703\u5728\u57f9\u80b2\u5834\u4e2d\u751f\u9577\u4e00\u81f3\u5169\u5e74\uff0c\u4e4b\u5f8c\u518d\u79fb\u690d\u5230\u4fee\u5fa9\u5730\u9ede\u30022019 \u5e74\uff0c\u6211\u5011\u9996\u6b21\u5c07\u5169\u6b72\u7684\u73ca\u745a\u82d7\u79fb\u690d\u5230\u5410\u9732\u6e2f\uff0c\u5b58\u6d3b\u7387\u63a5\u8fd1\u4e5d\u6210\u3002\u4e09\u5e74\u5f8c\uff0c\u5b83\u5011\u5728\u91ce\u5916\u6210\u719f\u4e26\u7522\u5375\u2014\u2014\u9019\u662f\u5be6\u9a57\u5ba4\u57f9\u80b2\u7684\u73ca\u745a\u9996\u6b21\u5728\u9999\u6e2f\u6c34\u57df\u7684\u4fee\u5fa9\u5730\u9ede\u5b8c\u6210\u7269\u7a2e\u7684\u5b8c\u6574\u751f\u547d\u9031\u671f\u3002\u9019\u500b\u91cc\u7a0b\u7891\u8b49\u660e\u4e86\u751f\u614b\u4fee\u5fa9\u7684\u53ef\u80fd\u6027\uff0c\u800c\u6211\u5011\u7576\u524d\u7684\u6311\u6230\u662f\u5982\u4f55\u5c07\u898f\u6a21\u64f4\u5927\u3002<\/span><\/p>\n

Hong Kong is often overlooked in global coral discussions, yet it is a unique \u201cmarginal environment\u201d where corals endure extreme seasonal temperature fluctuations, high sedimentation, and nutrient levels. Unlike many reef regions, Hong Kong has not experienced mass coral decline from bleaching or disease in recent decades. Instead, our restoration efforts target sites degraded by past coastal development and pollution, such as Tolo Harbour in the 1980s. What troubles me most is that many people are unaware that corals once flourished in these places, and therefore do not realize what has been lost. To address this, I founded <\/span>Coral Academy<\/b> in 2018, an outreach initiative that has since engaged over 100 schools, 30,000 students and teachers, and more than 700,000 members of the public. Through citizen science, school nurseries, workshops, and exhibitions, Coral Academy has helped raise awareness, and inspire action for coral conservation in Hong Kong.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u9999\u6e2f\u5728\u5168\u7403\u73ca\u745a\u8a0e\u8ad6\u4e2d\u5e38\u88ab\u5ffd\u7565\uff0c\u4f46\u5b83\u662f\u4e00\u500b\u7368\u7279\u7684\u300c\u908a\u7de3\u74b0\u5883\u300d\uff0c\u73ca\u745a\u5728\u9019\u88e1\u5fc5\u9808\u627f\u53d7\u6975\u7aef\u7684\u5b63\u7bc0\u6027\u6eab\u5ea6\u6ce2\u52d5\u3001\u9ad8\u6c89\u7a4d\u7387\u8207\u9ad8\u71df\u990a\u6c34\u5e73\u3002\u8207\u8a31\u591a\u73ca\u745a\u7901\u5340\u4e0d\u540c\uff0c\u9999\u6e2f\u8fd1\u5341\u5e74\u4e26\u672a\u56e0\u767d\u5316\u6216\u75be\u75c5\u800c\u51fa\u73fe\u5927\u898f\u6a21\u8870\u9000\u3002\u6211\u5011\u7684\u4fee\u5fa9\u5de5\u4f5c\u4e3b\u8981\u96c6\u4e2d\u5728\u904e\u53bb\u56e0\u6cbf\u5cb8\u767c\u5c55\u8207\u6c61\u67d3\u800c\u53d7\u7834\u58de\u7684\u5730\u9ede\uff0c\u4f8b\u5982 1980 \u5e74\u4ee3\u7684\u5410\u9732\u6e2f\u3002\u6700\u4ee4\u6211\u611f\u5230\u907a\u61be\u7684\u662f\uff0c\u8a31\u591a\u4eba\u751a\u81f3\u4e0d\u77e5\u9053\u9019\u4e9b\u5730\u65b9\u66fe\u7d93\u6709\u904e\u73ca\u745a\uff0c\u56e0\u6b64\u4e5f\u4e0d\u4e86\u89e3\u6211\u5011\u5931\u53bb\u4e86\u4ec0\u9ebc\u3002\u70ba\u4e86\u6539\u8b8a\u9019\u7a2e\u60c5\u6cc1\uff0c\u6211\u5728 2018 \u5e74\u5275\u7acb\u4e86 <\/span>\u73ca\u745a\u5b78\u9662\uff08Coral Academy\uff09<\/b>\uff0c\u9019\u662f\u4e00\u500b\u5916\u5c55\u9805\u76ee\uff0c\u81f3\u4eca\u5df2\u7d93\u63a5\u89f8\u8d85\u904e 100 \u6240\u5b78\u6821\u300130,000 \u540d\u5e2b\u751f\uff0c\u4ee5\u53ca\u8d85\u904e 700,000 \u540d\u516c\u773e\u3002\u900f\u904e\u516c\u6c11\u79d1\u5b78\u3001\u6821\u5712\u73ca\u745a\u57f9\u80b2\u3001\u5de5\u4f5c\u574a\u8207\u5c55\u89bd\uff0c\u73ca\u745a\u5b78\u9662\u5e6b\u52a9\u63d0\u5347\u4e86\u793e\u6703\u5927\u773e\u7684\u8a8d\u77e5\uff0c\u9f13\u52f5\u5171\u540c\u63a1\u53d6\u884c\u52d5\u4fdd\u8b77\u9999\u6e2f\u7684\u73ca\u745a\u3002<\/span><\/p>\n

Looking ahead, I am excited about the upcoming \u201cCoral Breeding and Education Hub,\u201d supported by CUHK and the ROLEX Perpetual Planet initiative. This facility will expand our breeding capacity, enabling us to produce a sustainable supply of coral juveniles for restoration. At the same time, we will continue to launch education programs that help students build emotional connections with local coral ecosystems, empowering them to take action in marine conservation.<\/span><\/p>\n

The SEYMF fellowship has been a profound encouragement in my journey. Receiving it twice was an unexpected honor, affirming that I was on the right path. It gave me the confidence to pursue ambitious research and conservation goals, and the support allowed me to attend conferences and conduct overseas studies. More importantly, it reminded me that passion and perseverance matter\u2014that my dream of being a coral scientist who bridges research, restoration, and education is not only valid but vital.<\/span><\/p>\n
