My journey in tourism has been shaped by a blend of curiosity, practical experience, and a deep appreciation for cultural heritage. Over the years, I have sought to connect academic insight with industry realities, always guided by the belief that responsible tourism can nurture both communities and visitors.
我在旅遊領域的旅程,源於好奇心、實踐經驗,以及對文化遺產的深切欣賞。多年來,我一直努力將學術洞見與業界現實相連,並始終堅信:負責任的旅遊能同時造福當地社區與旅客。
My academic path began at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, where I completed both my undergraduate and Master of Philosophy studies. Alongside my studies, I gained early practical experience working at a Hong Kong business hotel, which offered valuable insights into the daily operations of hospitality management. Later, I joined the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) in Thailand, where I observed how governments, destination marketing organizations, and industry leaders across the Asia-Pacific collaborate to advance sustainable tourism through dialogue, shared best practices, and partnerships. These experiences, combined with my academic training, revealed the real-world complexities of policy-making and regional cooperation, and laid the foundation for my appreciation of responsible, community-focused tourism. Inspired by these lessons, I pursued my PhD at James Cook University in Australia, where I was struck by the country’s thoughtful emphasis on sustainability and collaborative stewardship of natural and cultural resources.
我的學術道路始於香港理工大學,在那裡完成了學士及碩士學位。求學期間,我曾在香港一家商務酒店工作,獲得了酒店日常營運的寶貴體驗。其後,我加入位於泰國的亞太旅行協會(PATA),觀察到各地政府、目的地推廣機構及業界領袖如何透過對話、分享最佳實踐及夥伴合作,共同推動亞太區的可持續旅遊。這些經歷與學術訓練相互交織,讓我理解政策制定與區域合作的複雜性,並奠定了我對負責任、以社群為本的旅遊理念的基礎。受此啟發,我前往澳洲詹姆斯庫克大學攻讀博士學位,深受當地對可持續性與自然及文化資源細緻保護的重視所觸動。
Returning to Hong Kong, I joined academia and contributed to establishing one of the city’s first undergraduate programmes in sustainable tourism management. I helped shape a curriculum that integrated cultural heritage management, urban tourism, ecotourism, and customer experience management. Beyond the classroom, I collaborated with local partners to design interactive mobile apps that introduced students to egg tart making and cheongsam crafting—two cherished elements of Hong Kong’s intangible heritage. For egg tarts, I designed a fun kitchen stimulated game: students follow interactive steps to “compete” in recreating the perfect tart, guided by videos and practical tips I gathered from a master baker with over 30 years of experience. These playful, hands-on experiences encouraged students to connect emotionally with living traditions and appreciate their cultural significance.
回港後,我投身學術界,並參與建立本地首批可持續旅遊管理本科課程之一。我協助設計的課程涵蓋文化遺產管理、城市旅遊、生態旅遊及顧客體驗管理。課堂之外,我與本地夥伴合作,開發互動式手機應用程式,讓學生體驗蛋撻製作與旗袍工藝——香港珍貴的非物質文化遺產。以蛋撻為例,我設計了一個趣味廚房模擬遊戲:學生按照互動步驟「比賽」重現完美蛋撻,並透過影片及一位擁有三十多年經驗的師傅提供的技巧作指導。這些生動的體驗激發了學生的好奇心,並讓他們透過遊戲與探索,與活生生的傳統建立情感連結,進而欣賞其文化意義。
I have also involved in research which focused on the preservation and touristification of intangible cultural heritage. Supported by a Research Grants Council grant, vital role of Communities of Practice—groups where practitioners share codified and tacit knowledge, enabling authentic, collaborative preservation rather than mere commodification. Findings have been shared through academic papers, conference presentations, and magazine articles to reach industry, policymakers, and the wider public. In 2024, I served as a visiting scholar at the University of Cambridge, where I examined the role of artificial intelligence in tourism and hospitality. Guided by a services management professor, I shared insights at a webinar on how AI is applied in the sector, offering practical reflections for business leaders on its opportunities and challenges. These experiences reinforced my commitment to thoughtful, sustainable approaches to heritage and tourism in Hong Kong.
同時,我亦參與學術研究——聚焦於非物質文化遺產的保存與旅遊化。在大學教育資助委員會的支持下,我探討了「實踐社群」的重要角色——這些群體透過分享顯性與隱性知識,促進真正意義上的合作式保存,而非單純商品化。研究成果已透過學術論文、會議報告及雜誌文章分享予業界、政策制定者及公眾。2024 年,我有幸成為劍橋大學的訪問學者,探索人工智能在旅遊與酒店領域的角色。在服務管理教授的指導下,我於一場網絡研討會中分享了人工智能的應用,並為業界領袖提供其機遇與挑戰的實用思考。這些經歷進一步強化了我在香港推動深思熟慮的文化遺產及可持續旅遊的承諾。
In early 2025, I was appointed to the Travel Industry Authority, where I have contributed to several committees promoting responsible and professional standards among travel enterprises, guides, and escorts. As Vice Chair of the Corporate Services Committee in 2026, I continue to gain valuable insights into industry realities, which inform both my teaching and research, while supporting the advancement of sustainable tourism in Hong Kong.
2025 年初,我獲委任加入旅遊業監管局,並參與多個委員會,推動旅遊企業、導遊及領隊的責任與專業標準。2026 年,我擔任企業服務委員會副主席,持續獲取寶貴的業界洞察,並將其融入教學與研究,同時支持香港可持續旅遊的發展。
Looking back, I am flattered to see how experiences in industry and academia, across Asia and beyond, have come together in unexpected ways. Life’s path holds many gentle surprises, and each step has quietly deepened my wish to help care for what makes Hong Kong special. I am deeply grateful to the Sir Edward Youde Memorial Fund for this honour and for fostering a warm network that connects so many individuals with kindred spirits to serving the community and pursuing shared interests. Curiosity, dedication, and openness to learning from the world can lead to meaningful, lasting good.
