“Have the courage to face your obstacles and work through it.” I never forget my mother telling me that when I lost 90 per cent of my hearing in primary four. I often stared at my teachers with a blank expression, and my academic performance suffered. I decided to quit the mainstream education. She said, “You are running away. You don’t have the courage to confront your problems and improve it. You will never accomplish anything because you will flee from the next challenge again.”
That really ticked me off. I stayed. Following her advice, I put extra effort into my study, and worked hard to acquire the skill of lip-reading. It worked. My grades went back up, and I never worry about what others say about my impairment.
「要有勇氣面對你的障礙，並努力克服它。」我從未忘記小學四年級失去九成聽力時，母親對我說的這句話。當時我常常面無表情地盯著老師，學業表現也因此下滑。我曾決定離開主流學校。她說：「你在逃避。你沒有勇氣面對問題並加以改善。你永遠不會有所成就，因為下一次你還會逃避挑戰。」
那句話激怒了我，也促使我留下來。遵循她的建議，我加倍努力學習，並刻意練習讀唇術。努力有了成效，成績回升，我也不再為他人對我聽力障礙的議論而憂心。
Fast forward ten years. I was admitted to the English department at the Hong Kong Baptist University, where I studied comparative literature and translation. In 2010, I was awarded the HSBC Overseas Scholarship to spend a year studying sociology, social politics and literature at the London School of Economics. Thereafter, I returned to Hong Kong to complete my undergraduate studies, and graduated with the highest cumulative GPA in the comparative literature programme.
時光飛逝，十年後我獲錄取入讀香港浸會大學英文系，主修比較文學與翻譯。2010年，我獲頒匯豐海外獎學金，得以前往倫敦政治經濟學院（London School of Economics）進修一年，研習社會學、社會政治與文學。之後我返回香港完成本科學業，並以比較文學課程的最高累計平均績點畢業。
In 2012, I was awarded the Sir Edward Youde Memorial Overseas Fellowship for Disabled Students to pursue a Master of Arts at the School of Oriental and African Studies (University of London), which I completed with distinction. It was the time when I cultivated my interests in law and literature – how society is shaped through legal rules and regulations, how behaviour, norms and values are reflected in literary works, which in turn provoke social changes.
2012年，我獲頒尤德爵士紀念基金殘疾學生海外研究生獎學金，赴倫敦大學亞非學院攻讀文學碩士，並以優異成績完成學業。正是在那段期間，我培養出對法律與文學交叉領域的興趣──思考法律規範如何塑造社會、行為與規範及價值觀如何在文學作品中反映，進而促成社會變革。
My initial plan was to study PhD in comparative literature (with a law and literature focus) in the United Kingdom. But I did not have a solid training and understanding of the law. I decided to come home to enroll in the Juris Doctor programme in 2013, followed by the Postgraduate Certificate in Laws (PCLL) in 2015, both at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. It was during this period I met my mentor, a seasoned lawyer with strong ethical principles and integrity, who changed the trajectory of my career. He introduced me to the practice of law beyond book knowledge, how to navigate ethical and moral dilemmas, and how to make personally challenging yet professionally mandated decisions. I began my career under his supervision, from trainee solicitor in 2016 to associate in 2019, and senior associate in 2022 till the present day.
我原本計畫赴英國攻讀比較文學博士（側重法律與文學），但自覺缺乏紮實的法律訓練與理解。因此我決定回港，於2013年入讀香港中文大學法律博士（Juris Doctor）課程，並於2015年修畢法學專業證書（PCLL）。正是在此期間，我遇見了我的導師──一位具豐富實務經驗且高度職業操守的律師，改變了我的職業路徑。他引領我走出書本、接觸法律實務，教我如何處理倫理與道德困境，以及在面臨個人掙扎時做出專業上必須的抉擇。在他的指導下，我於2016年以見習律師身分開始職涯，2019
Time and time again, I was entrusted with new assignments, and self-doubt plagued me. The reassuring words of my mother would resonate in my mind. My supervisor, mentors and friends would refer me to resources such as courses, workshops and networking events, helping me to keep abreast of changes and expand my skill sets. Their support has motivated me to embrace lifelong learning and new opportunities, and driven me through tough moments.
屢次被委以新任務時，自我懷疑常在心頭盤旋，母親那句鼓勵的話仍在耳畔回響。我的上司、導師與朋友會向我推薦課程、工作坊與社交活動等資源，協助我掌握最新變化並擴展技能。正是他們的支持，激勵我擁抱終身學習與新機會，並在艱難時刻支持我走過。
The Fellowship has not only provided financial support for further studies, opened door to new realm beyond my comfort zone, but also changed perspectives about my potential. Through Youders’ stories, the Association has proven that any one of us – be it women, the disabled or marginalized – where given support and platforms to bring our talents into full play, can make real changes to not only our careers, but also our lives and the society at large.
這項獎學金不僅提供我進一步深造的經濟支援、打開走出舒適圈的大門，也改變了我對自身潛能的看法。透過尤德獎學金受助者的故事，該協會證明：任何人在獲得支持與平台後──無論是女性、身心障礙者或其他被邊緣化的群體──都能充分發揮才華，不僅改變個人的職涯，也能改變生命及整體社會。
